Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You find yourself in the kitchen with some of the surplus apple harvest. Your Aunt's plan is to make some dried apple slices and it is a nice sunny day outside. What would be the most energy-efficient way to dry them?

Answer: Solar drier

A solar drier uses the sun to do the drying. It will typically have a dark-coloured box with glass on the side facing the sun to collect the heat. The hot air will pass through several mesh racks which hold the fruit. Normally there is a small screened vent at the top to let moisture out and keep insects out.

All other answers normally require you to buy the energy in order to make them work.
2. You are out in the small field at the back helping with the hay, which has already been cut and allowed to dry. What would be the best tool to use for stacking the hay?

Answer: Pitch fork

These days, especially in larger fields, a baler or even a combine harvester might be used. If doing it by hand, the usual tool to use is a pitch fork. It allows you to gather the hay then put it on top of the hay stack. Your hands would not normally be considered a tool and would not be as effective as a pitch fork.
3. There are a couple of bee hives behind the barn and it is time to remove the honey. What part of the hive goes into the honey extractor?

Answer: Honeycomb

When the bees have filled a cell with honey, they will remove some of the water in the honey to help it keep better. They then cap the cell with wax until it is needed. The bee-keeper normally removes the capping wax and then puts several frames into the honey extractor.

The extractor spins inside a drum throwing the honey out on to the walls of the drum. The honey then pools in the bottom of the drum and can usually be removed through a tap.
4. You are being shown by your uncle how to make some kindling for the fire. What is the best tool to use?

Answer: Hand axe

Kindling is small diameter wood used for starting fires. Not all kindling needs to be split with an axe. Hand axes are small enough to be held in one hand. Wood splitters are intended to break up larger chunks of wood. Many accidents have happened with axes so getting proper training on the use of an axe would be wise.
5. In the front garden your aunt is showing you how to prune roses. What tool would you normally use?

Answer: Secateurs

Secateurs are designed for use in the garden, unlike scissors. The two main types are bypass and anvil. Bypass secateurs have two blades working with a scissor-type action. The anvil kind has one blade which cuts on to a flat 'anvil' and is more suited for woody-types of plant. Loppers are typically used on tree branches where the wood is a bit thicker.
6. It is feeding time for the ducks and the ducks know this because they are hanging around the feed bins. The four feed bins in front of you are marked with the feed inside them. Which should you use?

Answer: Wheat

Ducks are usually happy to eat grains such as wheat. Feeding them bread on a regular basis is, surprisingly perhaps, not good for them. Layer pellets are designed for egg-laying hens. Molasses is a syrup left over from making cane sugar. It is usually fed to cattle or horses mixed with other foods. Dog biscuits are intended for dogs and often will be too big for ducks to eat easily.
7. Your uncle has asked for some help doing some maintenance on the tractor. He has a hexagonal-headed bolt to remove and needs a suitable tool. Which should you give him?

Answer: Socket wrench

Although a mole-grip could be used if there is nothing else, the correct fitting socket wrench would be much better as it is less likely to damage the bolt head. Using pliers is likely to be unsuccessful and just cause damage. A screwdriver works best with screws.
8. It is time to harvest some of the pears from some of the large trees in the orchard. What is the best way to get at them?

Answer: Use an orchard ladder

An orchard ladder has a large base and typically three legs for good stability. It is designed for the job. Stepladders are not very good at coping with different ground levels and are difficult to get stable. Tree climbing, although fun, is likely to cause damage to the tree ... and yourself, should you fall out.

By the time the pears fall off, they will be over-ripe and mushy in the centre of the fruit. So the fruit is best picked while still on the tree. One test for when to pick is to tilt the fruit flat. It should detach itself from the tree if it is ripe enough.
9. Back to the veggie garden and your aunt has asked you to do some weeding around the onions. What tool from this selection is best suited to the job?

Answer: Hoe

The hoe is bit like a blade on the end of a stick and is designed to cut weeds off at ground level. The weed roots will typically die off and feed the soil with nutrients as they rot. Using a hoe does not break-up the soil which is usually better for the veggies. A hand fork on the other hand does. One of the problems with this is that you may end up damaging the roots of the veggies you are trying to grow. It also damages the soil.

The rake is more for gathering loose material such as leaves and the trowel is typically used to form a hole for planting seedlings.
10. Your aunt has got some spare milk from her cows and would like to make some yoghurt. What is the simplest (and cheapest) way to keep the milk warm overnight while it turns into yoghurt?

Answer: Use a vacuum flask/thermos

A pre-warmed vacuum flask would be the simplest and cheapest of the options given here. Buying more yoghurt is a bit of a cop-out and is not cheap. Sitting the milk on the window ledge would allow it to cool off too quickly.

There is a bit more to making yoghurt than is outlined here. If you want to try, speak to someone who knows. There are also plenty of books that can guide you. Some recipes are simpler than others.
