Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You watch as a colony of ants builds a large mound of dirt outside. What is the name of this first step of the scientific method?

Answer: Observation

The scientific method always begins with observing a natural process or asking a question. In this case, observing the ant colony may lead you to certain questions in your head, leading to a hypothesis. Sometimes there is no way to observe the idea physically, but you can still ask a question that leads to a hypothesis.
2. You decide to do some research on ants to help you better understand their behavior. What would probably NOT be a good source for information about ants?

Answer: Video Games Magazine

A games magazine would likely not have any good information about ants. All three of the others could be great sources of information. An insect field guide could help you identify the type of ants.
3. During your research, you may have questions about ants' behavior that you can create an experiment to answer. Which of these is NOT a good question to ask?

Answer: What are ants' favorite games to play?

You probably would not run across any information about ants playing games in your research. It is important that your question is related to your research in some way and something that you would like to explore further. Any of the other three questions would be a great starting point for a science experiment!
4. After asking your question, you should use your research and common sense to make an educated guess to answer it. What is the name of this step in the scientific method?

Answer: Hypothesis

A hypothesis is simply an educated guess based on your research and knowledge. You should always form a hypothesis that can be verified or proved wrong by your experimentation. You can often learn more by being wrong than by being right!
5. You decide to use four different types of foods to see what the ants prefer to eat. What step of the scientific method are you designing now?

Answer: Experiment

An experiment is a carefully designed situation controlled by you, the scientist, to determine whether your hypothesis is correct or incorrect. It is important that your experiment is designed carefully to avoid getting the wrong results and coming to wrong conclusion.
6. When preparing your foods for the ants is it important that each food is about the same size, weighs the same amount and is weighed before the test?

Answer: Yes

All of these steps should be taken in your experiment to make sure that you can use the data you collect to form a conclusion about your hypothesis. If you don't make the foods about the same size, the ants may prefer the foods provided in smaller amounts even though they like the larger food better. If you don't have the same weight of each food, it will be harder to compare them. If you don't weigh each food beforehand, you won't be able to tell how much the ants ate.
7. You decide to use sugar, salt, bread crumbs, and red pepper as the foods in your experiment. What is the best way to offer these foods to the ants?

Answer: In shallow containers equally spaced from their mound

You want to use a container so that you can measure the weight of the foods before and after the experiment. You would not want to seal the containers so that the ants can access the food.
8. Now you weigh your food samples before and after the experiment to see how much of each the ants ate. What is it called when you look at your data?

Answer: Analysis

Using a notebook to write down all of your data is always a good idea when experimenting so that you can go back later and see any possible mistakes you may have made or to use your data for further experiments.
9. After looking at your numbers, you notice that the ants ate ten times as much sugar as the other three foods. You decide that ants prefer to eat sugar over the other three choices. What is this step called?

Answer: Conclusion

Your conclusion must always be drawn from the data that you collect during your experiment and after you have a chance to analyze it. It is important that your conclusion is accurate and that you don't conclude the wrong thing just so that it matches your hypothesis. Remember you can often learn more in science if your hypothesis was wrong!
10. If your guess was correct that ants would prefer sugar over the other three foods, what would be a good next step?

Answer: Repeat the experiment with more or different foods

Creating new experiments to increase your understanding of ants eating habits is always a good idea. You could also start a new experiment on other ant behaviors such as where they get the material for their mounds, how they build the underground networks of tunnels, or countless other things!
