Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which season of the year would you expect to see the majority of baby birds fledge (leave) their nests?

Answer: Spring

The baby bird in the picture is not yet ready to leave its nest as mum and dad are still feeding it. When the baby is growing up, it will grow feathers and develop wing muscles to enable it to fly and leave the nest. This period in their life is called fledging and normally happens in spring.
2. What do dogs do in the summer to keep cool?

Answer: Pant

There are various ways for an animal to keep cool in hot weather. These include panting, sweating and flapping their ears. Dogs can only sweat through the pads of their feet, so to remain cool they pant to get rid of excess heat.
3. Autumn (fall) is the time of year when which type of creature start to build their nests in piles of dead leaves?

Answer: Hedgehog

Hedgehogs are small animals with prickly hairs called spines. If they feel threatened, they roll into a tight little ball to stop other animals or large birds from attacking them. They scurry around looking for food at night-time and hibernate during the winter, their favourite place being in piles of dead leaves.
4. Spring is in the air when you look in a field and see lambs jumping around for joy. Which of these baby animals is mainly associated with Easter?

Answer: Bunny

The bunny rabbit is associated with Easter, as well as lambs and chicks. According to German folklore, the Easter bunny would visit the night before Easter with chocolate eggs, and much like Christmas, if children were good they would be given the sweet treats.
5. The fur on the Arctic fox is usually grey but it changes to white during which season?

Answer: Winter

Arctic foxes live in very cold regions so they have thick fur to keep them warm. During the summer they have brown fur but this changes to white in the winter. This then acts as camouflage against the snow to make it difficult for predators to spot them.
6. What is the name given to the time when some animals sleep during the winter for long periods of time?

Answer: Hibernation

Some mammals such as bears, mice and hedgehogs hibernate during the winter. Food is scarce and the temperature becomes colder so they sleep in a warm dry place until the spring. Their heartbeat and breathing slows right down to conserve energy while they sleep.
7. It is summertime and you are walking down the road when you notice a dog alone inside a locked car looking very distressed. The windows are closed and it is very hot inside the car. What should you do?

Answer: Report it to an adult or telephone the police straight away

It is very dangerous for any dog to stay inside a locked car during a hot summer as the heat could kill them. Even a window slightly open is not enough. If the temperature is 22°C/72°F outside, it can reach up to 47°C/117°F inside the car within an hour. Don't leave it until mum or dad come home from work to tell them as that may be too late for the dog. Don't smash the window either as you could injure yourself. If you see a dog in distress, find an adult or even call the police straight away.
8. Which animals bury their nuts in the autumn so they have plenty of food during the harsh winter months?

Answer: Squirrels

Because there is often a lack of food for animals in the winter, some squirrels spend time in the autumn collecting nuts and hoard them away in a pile or even bury them underground. The nuts they eat depend on where they live but acorns from oak trees are a favourite.
9. Spring is the time when everything is growing and bursting into life. What type of creature emerges from a chrysalis in springtime?

Answer: Butterfly

Butterflies have a different life cycle to a lot of other creatures. They grow from a very small egg into a caterpillar (or larva). The caterpillar sheds its skin four or five times and then forms into a chrysalis. A chrysalis is a slightly hard case, and inside this case is the caterpillar changing into a butterfly.
10. Many birds fly north or south when seasons change to enable them to breed, feed and live in warmer climates. What is the special name for this?

Answer: Migration

A lot of bird species fly thousands of miles in the spring and autumn from one region to another. The word they use for this is migration. This is so they can avoid cold weather, find food as well as breed with mates and then raise their young. Some birds like geese can be seen flying in the sky in a 'V' formation when they migrate.
