Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. First things first - let's talk about money. What currency will you need for your trip to Italy?

Answer: euros

Italy is one of the 19 countries of the European Union that use the euro as their currency. The euro was officially introduced in January 2002. Italy's previous currency was the lira.

Dollars are used in the USA (many other countries also use the dollar as their currency), pounds in the UK, and pesos in Mexico, the Philippines and other Latin American countries.
2. Now for a quick language lesson! Which of these expressions will be useful to you during your stay?

Answer: per favore

"Per favore" means "please" in Italian. It is a good idea to use it when you order something in a bar or restaurant, or go shopping.

"Merci" means "thank you" in French, "guten Tag" is "good day" in German, and "adios" is "goodbye" in Spanish.
3. As Italy is a peninsula with thousands of miles of coastline, beaches are always within reach. In which sea will you be able to swim while you are in Italy?

Answer: Mediterranean Sea

Italy lies in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, and its coastline is 7,600 km (4,722 miles) long. Lovers of sun, sand and sea are in for a treat!

The Black Sea lies between southeastern Europe and western Asia, while the Baltic Sea is found in northern Europe, enclosed between Scandinavia, Finland, the Baltic countries (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania), Poland and Germany. The Red Sea is part of the Indian Ocean, and divides the Arabian peninsula from northeastern Africa.
4. If you like winter sports, you'll be spoiled for choice in Italy! In which mountain range will you be able to go skiing?

Answer: Alps

The Alps form a natural arch in the north of Italy, separating it from its neighbours (France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia). The highest peak of the range, and Europe's highest peak as well, is the Monte Bianco (or Mont Blanc), shared between Italy and France.

The Andes (the longest mountain range in the world) are found in South America, while the Himalayas are in south Asia. The Urals, located in western Russia, form a natural boundary between Europe and Asia.
5. If you like islands, Italy's your country! Which of these islands will you be able to visit when you are there?

Answer: Sardinia

Sardinia lies in the Tyrrhenian Sea, in the western part of the Mediterranean Sea. Corsica (which belongs to France) lies just north of it.

The remaining two choices are also Mediterranean islands, though smaller than Sardinia or Corsica. Mallorca is the largest of the Balearic Islands, which are situated off the eastern coast of Spain. Crete, in the Aegean Sea, is the largest of the Greek isles.
6. Now let's head for some of Italy's world-famous cities! Where will you be able to travel by gondola on the canals, but not drive a car?

Answer: Venice

Undoubtedly one of most beautiful, romantic places on earth, Venice is built on over a hundred islands in a lagoon on the Adriatic Sea. You can walk or take a boat to get around, but you will have to leave your car outside the city.

Florence, Naples and Milan are all major Italian cities and tourist destinations - all very much worth visiting, though Venice is truly one of a kind.
7. Talking of sightseeing, which of these famous landmarks will you NOT see during your Italian vacation?

Answer: Eiffel Tower

The Eiffel Tower is in Paris, which is the capital of France. All the other choices are renowned Italian landmarks: the Leaning Tower is in Pisa, Ponte Vecchio in Florence, and the Colosseum in Rome.
8. If you visit the city of Turin, home to the famous FIAT automaker, you will be able to see Italy's longest river. What is its name? (Think Teletubbies!)

Answer: Po

Rising in the western Alps, and flowing across northern Italy for 652 km (402 miles), the Po runs through a number of important Italian cities before reaching the Adriatic Sea. The Po Valley is the largest plain in Italy, and about one-third of the country's population live there.

The other three choices are all major European rivers. The Rhine flows through Switzerland, Germany and the Netherlands, while the Seine runs through Paris, the French capital, and the Thames runs through London, the capital of the UK.
9. When you visit St Peter's Basilica in Rome, maybe hoping to catch a glimpse of the Pope, you will be setting foot in the world's smallest independent state. What is it called?

Answer: Vatican City

St Peter's Basilica, the largest church in the world, is part of the Vatican city-state, the smallest independent state in the world, a walled enclave completely surrounded by the city of Rome. The Pope, the head of the Catholic Church, is also the head of the state.

Singapore, in south-eastern Asia, is also a city-state. Andorra and Monaco, both located in Europe, are among the world's smallest countries, though larger than Vatican City.
10. No trip to Italy would be complete without mentioning the food! Which of these dishes will you NOT find in a typical Italian restaurant?

Answer: paella

Paella is a famous Spanish dish made with rice, chicken, seafood and vegetables. All the other dishes, of course, are Italian, and well known all over the world.
