Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is this little baby called?

Answer: a kit

Adult rabbits are called bucks and does, and babies are called kits or kittens or, more informally, bunnies. There are many kinds of rabbits found all over the world, living in every kind of habitat from deserts to forests, to meadows and wetlands. The can be found in most continents, except Antarctica, although not all parts of all continents have rabbits.
Rabbits did not used to naturally live in Australia, but were introduced there in 1859. They have done so well there, with very few natural predators, that they are gravely changing the environment and creating quite a problem.
2. This little kangaroo is called a joey. What would his mother be called?

Answer: a jill

An adult female kangaroo can also be called a doe, a male is a buck or a boomer and babies are called joeys. The groups they live in are called herds, mobs or troops.
They live mainly in Australia, with some living in New Guinea. They are marsupials, which means that a great deal of the raising of the babies is done in the mother's pouch. In fact when the baby is about the size of a jelly bean, he crawls out of the mother's birth canal and up to the pouch by clinging to the mother's fur, without any help from his mother.
There are two types of kangaroos, Eastern Grey Kangaroos and Red Kangaroos (which are the bigger of the two types).
3. This baby is called a foal or a colt. What kind of animal is it?

Answer: a zebra

Zebras are closely related to horses, but they live in Africa. The adult female is called a mare and the male a stallion. Babies are foals or colts and they live in herds, crossings or harems. Attempts to domesticate zebras, like horses, have not been as successful, because their behaviour is not as predictable as that of horses, and they panic much more easily. A zebra's stripes are unique and many believe that they serve as camouflage. Since their primary predator, lions, are believed to be colour blind, a zebra should be able to hide in tall grass, if it keeps perfectly still.

However, it does tend to panic easily!
4. This baby is called a calf. What kind of animal is it?

Answer: a giraffe

An adult male giraffe is called a bull, a female a cow or a doe and a baby is a calf. Giraffes are found in parts of Africa and are the tallest of all land animals. It can stand over five metres tall, with one male giraffe found to be six metres tall.
Giraffes use their tall necks to eat leaves off of trees, but it also makes drinking difficult and they have to spread their legs to be able to reach the water. Giraffes drink large amounts when they can and can go for a couple of days with nothing fresh to drink.
They only have to sleep for four to five hours a day.
5. What kind of birds are these little chicks?

Answer: penguins

Penguins are a type of flightless bird that live only in the southern hemisphere, mostly further south where it is colder. In fact penguins are the only birds that live in Antarctica all year round. Magellanic Penguins, like these chicks, live around the southern tip of South America and on the islands around there.
Although they cannot fly, they are very well adapted for swimming. Adult penguins are called males and females, and they live in rookeries or colonies.
6. These little guys make great pets. What are they?

Answer: puppies

Dogs have been companions and friends to people for thousands of years. They were first domesticated about 15,000 years ago, and have descended from wolves. In the wild, dogs live in packs, and these packs have leaders. Dogs know their place in the pack and instinctively show obedience and loyalty to the leaders. This, along with their intelligence, is what makes them so easy to train.
These particular puppies are Labrador Retrievers. Adult male dogs are called dogs and females are called bitches. Young dogs can be called puppies or pups.
7. This baby is a white tiger cub. What would her mother be called?

Answer: a tigress

Tigers are the biggest of all cats, and adult males are called tigers. Tigers used to live over large portions of Asia, but their habitat has declined drastically in the last 100 years. Now they still live in southern and eastern Asian, but in much smaller pockets.
Most tigers are rusty-orange and black, and white tigers (as seen in the picture) are not found very often in the wild. They are bred more in zoos. Aside from breeding times, tigers are essentially solitary animals.
8. What kind of animal is this little pup?

Answer: a wolf

There are various different kinds of wolves and they live all over the northern parts of North America, Asia and parts of Europe. They used to live all they way south into Mexico and even as far as the northern part of Africa, but they have pulled further north as their habitat has been taken over by people.
Baby wolves are called pups or whelps, adults females are called bitches and males are called dogs. They are very social animals and live in packs or routs.
Dogs are descended from gray wolves.
9. This little guy is an elephant. What is a baby elephant called?

Answer: a calf

Adult female elephants are called cows and males are called bulls. They live in groups called herds or parades.
There are two kinds of elephants. African elephants can most quickly be recognized by their larger ears. We can tell that the baby in the picture is an Asian elephant, because his ears are smaller.
Elephants used to be widely hunted for their tusks (and sadly, still are by poachers), which are made of ivory. Both male and female African elephants grow tusks, but only male Asian elephants grow them.
10. This cub is a polar bear. What would his father be called?

Answer: a boar

Polar bears are solitary animals that spend most of their lives living on the ice in the north. The ice as a good base from which the bears can hunt their favourite food, seals. Polar bears have adapted well to living in the cold and are excellent swimmers.
Global warming and the melting of the ice caps are a serious threat to the bears, which is why they are considered a vulnerable species.
Adult male bears are called boars and females are called sows.
Polar bears only live in the northern parts of the world and penguins only live in the southern parts of the world, so they would never meet.
