Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which country might you see a koala bear in the wild?

Answer: Australia

Koalas are not really bears at all but marsupials. This means that they have pouches in which they carry their babies. They live in eucalyptus trees and mainly eat eucalyptus leaves.
2. Which of these big cats can run fastest?

Answer: Cheetah

Cheetahs can run at about 70mph (or 110 kph). Although they are very big they can't roar like lions or tigers but they do purr like domestic cats.
3. The father lion goes out hunting for food to feed the cubs.

Answer: False

It is the mother lion who hunts for the cubs food and teaches them how to survive. The father lion is not involved at all with the care of the cubs.
4. Which animal is sometimes called 'the ship of the desert'?

Answer: Camel

A camel can walk for many miles in the desert without needing any food or water. Its feet have large leathery pads and two toes which make it easier to walk on the hot sand, and to balance. It is the only animal that can walk easily in the desert.
5. Which animal eats virtually only bamboo leaves, stems and shoots?

Answer: Giant panda

In captivity, giant pandas will eat a small amount of other foods. Apples are a favourite. In the wild they eat virtually nothing but bamboo. The bamboo has so little food value that they must eat all day to keep themselves alive. They live in the wild in bamboo forests in China.
6. If your cat rubs itself against the furniture what is it doing?

Answer: Scent marking its territory

Cats have scent glands on the sides of their heads, in their mouths, on their paws and on their tails. By rubbing these parts of themselves against your table or chair they are leaving a scent signal to other cats to keep away.
7. Some animals eat a lot in the late summer and autumn and then sleep during the winter months. What is the name of this behaviour?

Answer: Hibernation

Some animals cannot survive the cold winter because there is less food for them to eat, and also they may become frozen. During the autumn they eat a lot and also store food that they can eat when they wake up during their sleep time.
8. Which is the largest land mammal?

Answer: African elephant

African elephants weigh 2250 to 6350 kg, and are 2.4 to 4 metres tall at the shoulder. They live about seventy years, and have wonderful memories. An elephant's trunk is so powerful and precise that it can carry its calves and do more delicate things like picking flowers!
9. What type of animal is a whale?

Answer: Mammal

A whale is a mammal because it gives birth to live young instead of laying eggs. The blue whale is the largest mammal in the world and the largest living animal in the world.
10. If you keep a pet animal in a cage what is important for you to do?

Answer: All of these are important

It is obviously important that your pet gets enough to eat and drink, but it is also important that it has enough space in its cage to run around so that it keeps fit. If it is just left on its own with nothing to play with it may become bored and depressed. If you spend time playing with your pet, it will be much happier.
