Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Can you 'spot' what type of puppies these little white newborns are?

Answer: Dalmatian

Dalmatian puppies are born completely white. It is not until they are a couple of weeks old that they start to get their spots. While many Dalmatians look similar, all of them have a unique spot pattern.
2. What is the primary way to tell if an elephant is an Asiatic or African elephant?

Answer: The size of their ears.

This photo is of a baby elephant that is only a day or two old. It is an Asiatic elephant, which can be told by the size of its ears. African elephants, which live in a hotter climate, have bigger ears which they use to keep themselves cool by waving their ears. This cools the blood circulating in their ears which then cools the body as it recirculates.
3. Camels store water in their humps.

Answer: False

It is a common misconception that camels store water in their humps. Actually, they store fat for when food is scarce. There are two types of camels, the bactrian which has two humps and the dromedary which has one. You can tell which is which by looking to see if their back looks like the letter "B" for Bactrian, or "D" for Dromedary.
4. Where are baby polar bear cubs born?

Answer: Under the snow

Polar bears have their babies (usually two) in an under-the-snow maternity den where they remain until the spring thaw in March or April. After emerging, the mother, who has not eaten or drunk for months, heads for the water and starts hunting seals. The mother's success at hunting seals is critical for her own needs, her ability to feed her babies, and to teach them how to hunt on their own.
5. Which of the following animals is most likely to attack a baby sea turtle after it hatches and runs for the sea?

Answer: Seagull

When it is time for baby sea turtles to hatch, the sky overhead fills with birds including sea gulls, waiting to eat. As the babies in a clutch are all born on one night, there are lots of babies trying to scramble for the water and lots of animals ready to feast on them. Only a very small percentage of all sea turtles born reach adulthood and make babies of their own.
6. What is the proper name for a baby koala?

Answer: Joey

This photo depicts a mother koala and her joey (baby), whom she will carry around on her back for up to a year. Found only in Australia, they are sometimes incorrectly referred to as koala bears, but are in fact a marsupial, and have a pouch. The koala is one of the few animals in the world that are capable of digesting eucalyptus leaves which make up most of their diet.
7. Where would you find a piglet's trotters?

Answer: At the bottom of his legs

Trotters is the term used for pigs' feet. Baby pigs are called piglets and there can be as many as ten in a litter. Pigs are very smart and have been used for centuries to hunt for truffles. Some breeds are even kept as pets.
8. When this baby walrus is grown, which of the following things might he develop as a weapon?

Answer: Tusks

This adorable face belongs to a baby walrus, who, when grown, will sport some very vicious tusks which he will use for breaking holes in ice, for protection, and to battle for breeding rights. When grown, males keep a harem of breeding females, and only he mates with them. While they are adorable when babies, they are not as cute once they are grown and full of a ton of blubber.
9. Look closely at this picture and tell me what the common name is for this baby animal?

Answer: Moose

This adorable baby is a little moose who will someday have some of the most massive antlers in the animal world. Moose are found in the northern areas of North America, Russia, and Scandinavia. Moose are solitary animals who eat both terrestrial and aquatic plant life and prefer forested areas in which to live.
10. This adorable baby bird will one day grow up to be an owl.

Answer: False

This is a baby flamingo, who, one day, after years of dining on shrimp, will change color from white and gray into a lovely pink color. He will live near the shore where he uses his long legs to enable him to stand in shallow water while hunting for his aquatic food.
