Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Out of the fractions below, which is greatest? 3/20, 3/9 or 3/5

Answer: 3/5

The numerator is the top number (in this case '3'). The denominator is the bottom number. The larger the numerator, the larger the fraction, the larger the denominator, the smaller the fraction.

Eg:
1/2 is larger than 1/8
5/8 is larger than 5/12
2. What is the number below rounded off to the nearest ten? 384

Answer: 380

If the last number is less than 5, round down. If it is 5 or higher, you round up.

Eg:
472=470
476=480.
3. How many syllables are in the word below? Rhinoceros

Answer: 4

A syllable is a unit of pronunciation that forms a word, or a part of a word.

Eg:
Tree = 1
Cupcake = 2
Kangaroo = 3
Dictionary = 4
4. Which words in the following sentence should be capitalized? his sister goes to washington preparatory academy.

Answer: His, Washington, Preparatory, Academy

The first letter of a sentence always needs to be a capital letter. Names of states, schools and people need to be capitalized as well. Although "sister" is a person, it is not her name, so lowercase is fine.

Eg:
He goes to West Park Elementary School.
My friend Amy lives in New York.
5. Which word completes the following sentence? The party will be fun for you and _____.

Answer: me

A lot of people get mixed up when it comes to using I or me in a sentence. Well, I is the first person singular subject pronoun, that means it refers to the person performing the action of a verb. Me is an object pronoun, so that means it refers to the person that the action of a verb is being done to, or to which a preposition refers.

It seems especially problematic when there are two pronouns: you and me or you and I. The choice can be made by removing the "you and" part, and seeing whether I or me fits best.

In this case, the party should be fun for me, so it should be fun for you and me (or him and me, or her and me).
6. Which punctuation mark would be correct for the sentence below? I love to skateboard

Answer: !

An exclamation mark (!) is used to show emphasis or surprise.
A question mark (?) is used when you ask something.
An ampersand (&) is used in place of the word 'and'.

Eg:
I went to the store today.
She loves to eat ice cream!
Do you like to read?
7. Can you pick the antonym of the word below? tame

Answer: wild

An antonym means the opposite. Opposite basically means contrary.

Examples of words and their antonyms:
Good - Bad
Sweet - Sour
Up - Down
8. Can you pick the correct homophone, to, too or two, for the following sentence? I read a book and she read that book ___.

Answer: too

In this sentence you would use 'too' because it basically means also. 'Two' is a number, so that wouldn't fit here. 'To' would fit if the sentence said "She wants to read that book".
A homonym is a word that sounds like another word, but means something different.

Eg:
There, They're, Their
Won, One
Know, No
9. Which farm animal completes the sentence below? A father _____ is called a boar.

Answer: pig

A lot of animals are called different names depending on their age and whether they're male or female.

Eg:
A baby cow is called a calf.
A female chicken is called a hen.
A baby horse is called a foal.
10. According to where the hands are at, what is the time? Big hand is on the 12. Little hand is on the 7.

Answer: 7:00

The little hand points to the first number. The big hand points to the second number(s). 12 always starts things back at 0.

Eg:
Big hand on the 3, little hand on the 3 = 3:15
Big hand on the 6, little hand on the 3 = 3:30
Big hand on the 9, little hand on the 3 = 3:45
Big hand on the 12, little hand on the 3 = 3:00
