1. What is the name of the Disney play and the movie about Simba, his father Mufasa, and his uncle Scar?

Answer: The Lion King

Disney first released "The Lion King" in 1994. In this story, Simba is supposed to take over the crown as King of the Jungle from his father, Mufasa. But his evil uncle wants the crown for himself. Simba, in danger, runs away, but he learns some important lessons and returns to retrieve the crown for himself.

This image is of a chess set, with the King piece in the middle.
2. Who is the author of the Magnus Chase and Percy Jackson series of books?

Answer: Rick Riordan

Rick Riordan is a very busy writer who was born in Texas. He was a high school English teacher before he stopped so he could write full time. His Percy Jackson series calls upon Greco-Roman history; the Kane Chronicles relate to ancient Egypt; and the Magnus Chase books use Norse mythology.
3. What are the two names for a sport that involves a field, a round ball, and two nets used as goal-scoring areas?

Answer: Soccer and football

What is called soccer in the United States is known as football in most other countries. The ball pictured here is a soccer ball. Traditionally, soccer balls are stitched together from 32 hexagons, but it's not a requirement.
4. The earth has several continents. Which of the following is NOT a recognized continent?

Answer: Ireland

Ireland is often called "The Emerald Isle" because its landscapes are so green. It has many rocky, steep cliffs over the ocean that make for dramatic views. It is not a continent. It has two different countries represented in it. Most of the island is the Republic of Ireland, while one area in the north is called Northern Ireland and is actually part of the United Kingdom.
5. A Scottish man named Alexander Graham Bell is credited with creating a device that has been used in some form or another since 1885. What did he invent?

Answer: Telephone

There is some dispute over who exactly invented the telephone. But ultimately the credit went to Alexander Graham Bell. Bell was a multi-talented man from Scotland who came from a family full of engineers, teachers, and speech specialists.

Bell created a type of phone that was connected by wires to a large wired network. Most homes had phones connected to those wires, too, until cell phones because popular. At that point, wired phones, also called landlines, started becoming obsolete.

This picture is of a phone booth, a type of booth where people could pay to make a phone call over a landline.
6. If you were playing Gin Rummy, Old Maid, or Go Fish, what would you be playing with?

Answer: Deck of cards

Gin Rummy, Old Maid, and Go Fish are all games you can play with a deck of cards. Cards have been around for hundreds of years. Modern decks of cards have 52 to a deck, broken into four suits: hearts, diamonds, spades, and clubs.

The image here is of a deck outside a house, another use of the word deck.
7. "Mona Lisa", "The Starry Night", and "Girl with the Pearl Earring" are all one kind of art. What is it?

Answer: Paintings

"Mona Lisa" was painted by Leonardo da Vinci, an Italian artist. "Starry Night" was painted by Vincent Van Gogh, who was Dutch. "Girl with the Pearl Earring" was painted by Johannes Vermeer, who was also Dutch.

The picture here is of a palette, which painters use to mix colors.
8. The following is a lyric from a song for children: "Baa, baa, black sheep, have you any _______ ?" What word goes in the blank?

Answer: Wool

"Baa, Baa, Black Sheep" is a nursery rhyme that originated in Medieval England. The first verse is:

Baa, baa, black sheep,
Have you any wool?
Yes, sir, yes, sir,
Three bags full;
One for the master,
And one for the dame,
And one for the little boy
Who lives down the lane.

The image here is of a WOOLy mammoth.
9. I am small, black and white, and capable of generating a really powerful smell as a defense against predators. What kind of animal am I?

Answer: Skunk

Skunks live in North and South America. They eat plants, animals, and garbage if they can find it. They can spray their powerful spray up to 10 feet when they feel threatened and it smells so bad, it frightens away even much bigger animals like bears and definitely humans. If you are ever sprayed by a skunk, you will have to use baking soda, vinegar, hydrogen peroxide, or other special ingredients as regular soap won't remove the oils that cause the smell.

This image is of a weasel, who is in the same family as the skunk.
10. Which of the following is a dramatic effect of electricity?

Answer: Lightning

Electricity is a force caused by charged particles. Many scientists over centuries have helped us understand and harness electricity, including Andrè-Maire Ampére, Thomas A. Edison, Benjamin Franklin, and Nikola Tesla. Lightning in the sky occurs when there's a thundercloud high and many small bits of frozen rain collide: all those pieces bumping into each other create an electrical charge, and eventually you may see a lightning bolt from the cloud.
