Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Arizona became a state on February 14, 1912. What holiday/special occasion is also celebrated by many people on February 14th?

Answer: Valentine's Day

Arizona was the 48th state to join the United States. Hawaii and Alaska became states in 1959 so for many years, there were 48 states in the United States. Because Arizona became a state on Valentine's Day, it is sometimes called "The Valentine State".
2. Arizona's capital city was named for a mythological bird which is reborn from fire. What is the name of the city and the bird?

Answer: Phoenix

Phoenix became the capital of the Arizona Territory in 1889, and when Arizona became a state in 1912, Phoenix was named its capital. It was named after the mythological bird because the city was built on the ruins of early Native American settlements, thus the city was being reborn. You can visit some of the remains of the early settlements at the Pueblo Grande Museum in Phoenix.
3. People come from all over the world to see a spectacular site in northern Arizona. Which natural wonder is located in Arizona?

Answer: The Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon is a very long and wide gorge created many years ago by the Colorado River which runs at the bottom of the canyon. When you visit the Grand Canyon, you can view it from the top, or you can hike or take a mule ride down to the bottom of the canyon. Arizona's official state nickname is "The Grand Canyon State".
4. Arizona has a very famous bridge in Lake Havasu City that came from England. What bridge was "falling down" before it was moved to Arizona?

Answer: London Bridge

Yes, the London Bridge in Lake Havasu City actually came from London. It had been built in 1831 over the Thames River in London to replace an earlier bridge that was over 600 years old. The new bridge wasn't built for cars, however, and it began to sink under the weight of the traffic. In 1968, the bridge was sold and moved to Arizona, where it opened as a tourist attraction in 1971.
5. Arizona has many types of animals. Which of the animals below lives in the wild in Arizona?

6. During the wild west days of the 1880s, a famous gunfight took place in Arizona at the O.K. Corral. In what city, that is named for something you would see in a cemetery, did the gunfight take place?

Answer: Tombstone

Tombstone is located in southeastern Arizona near the Mexican border. It was founded in 1877 when silver was discovered in the area. The gunfight at the O.K. Corral took place in 1881, and the city continues to re-enact the event for tourists.
7. Arizona has a lot of desert. What type of plant that does not need much water grows naturally in the Arizona desert?

Answer: Cactus

A cactus can grow in very dry conditions so it is a common plant in deserts. Most cactuses (or cacti) have sharp spines instead of true leaves. Arizona has many types of cactuses including the Saguaro Cactus, and the Saguaro Cactus flower is the official Arizona State Flower.

The Sonoran Desert is the largest desert in Arizona, but parts of the Mojave, Chihuahuan and Great Basin Deserts are also located in Arizona.
8. Arizona has over twenty Native American tribes. Which tribe is the largest in the state, and has a special language that was used as a code during World War II?

Answer: Navajo

The Navajo Nation is located in northeastern Arizona and also in New Mexico and Utah. The Navajo call themselves the Diné, and their language was successfully used as a code because it wasn't well known outside of their community. You can visit the Navajo Nation and the Four Corners Monument, which marks the only place in the United States where you can stand in four states at once.
9. Arizona has a famous National Park called the Petrified Forest. The wood in this park has turned into what?

Answer: Stone

The Petrified Forest is a semi-desert area in northeastern Arizona that has many deposits of petrified wood. Petrified wood can be found around the world. It occurs when wood is buried, and the woody materials are replaced with minerals such as quartz so that the wood becomes stone. Petrified wood is the official Arizona State Fossil.
10. Meteor Crater is located in northern Arizona. Who trained in the crater in the 1960s because the terrain resembled the moon?
