Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The shape of most stop signs is octagonal, so that means it has how many sides?

Answer: 8

A stop sign is a traffic sign that usually has a red background, and a foreground that has big white letters that reads, "STOP." There are variations of stop signs, however. Japan, for instance, uses a triangle, and some places In Europe have a circular sign. Some stop signs might be colored yellow or blue, but the most traditional stop signs are red, white, and octagonal.
2. German Shepherds, Labrador Retrievers and poodles are all dog breeds. What noise do they make that also sounds like part of a tree?

Answer: bark

Barking is common in most dogs, and is also heard by wolves, seals, foxes, and coyotes. Other terms people might use to identify the sound of a dog include: woof, bay, howl, yelp, yap, and growl. The bark of a tree has nothing to do with dogs; it is the outermost covering of a tree that protects it from the elements and predators. It also helps the tree retain moisture.
3. Mickey, Minnie, Donald, and Goofy are all characters from what film company?

Answer: Disney

Mickey Mouse was the character who put Disney on the map. He was created in 1928 by Walt Disney and made his first appearance in the film "Steamboat Willie." Minnie Mouse is Mickey's girlfriend, and she made her first appearance in the 1928 film, "Plane Crazy." Donald Duck is Mickey's friend, and he made his first appearance in a 1931 in "The Adventures of Mickey Mouse." Goofy is another friend of Mickey, and he was first seen in 1932 as Dippy Dawg.
4. Which of the following numbers is a prime number?

Answer: 2

A prime number is any number greater than 1 that is only divisible by 1 and itself. The number 2 is the only positive prime number, as every other even number can be divided by itself as well as the number 2. Many odd numbers are not prime numbers, such as nine and 27, because they can be divided by 3, for example. Numbers that are not prime are called composite numbers, which means they have more than two factors.
5. Willy Wonka, Matilda, and James Henry Trotter are characters from which author?

Answer: Roald Dahl

Dahl was born in 1916, and was an author of many children's fantasy novels. Willy Wonka was featured in the 1964 book, "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," and was portrayed by Gene Wilder in the 1971 film, "Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory." "Matilda" was published in 1988, and was made into a movie of the same name in 1996. James Henry Trotter was the central character in the 1961 book, "James and the Giant Peach," which was made into a film released in 1996.
6. You can blow bubbles with Bazooka, Hubba Bubba, and Juicy Fruit, which are all popular products of what confection?

Answer: gum

Bazooka bubble gum dates back to 1947, and was created by the Topps Company, which later became known for its sports trading cards. The gum came wrapped in paper that featured comics that included the character Bazooka Joe. Hubba Bubba and Juicy Fruit were both first manufactured by the Wrigley Company.

While Juicy Fruit is classified as a chewing gum, meaning it has less gum base than bubble gum, and is therefore less susceptible to blowing bubbles, you can still blow bubbles with it, particularly if you chew multiple sticks of gum.
7. What is the largest country in North America by area, which is known for beavers, ice hockey, and maple leafs?

Answer: Canada

Covering 3.85 million square miles (9.98 million square kilometers), Canada is larger than any other country in the world with the exception of Russia. The beaver is native to Canada, and is one of the national symbols of Canada. Ice hockey is the national winter sport, and the maple leaf is featured on the flag of Canada, as well as being the inspiration of the National Hockey League's Toronto ice hockey team.
8. Which of the following animals is NOT a mammal?

Answer: shark

Mammals are classified as warm-blooded vertebrates that have hair or fur, and the females give live birth to their young and provide milk. Sharks do not fit this classification, as most are cold-blooded, and don't have hair, and don't have mammary glands necessary to produce milk. Sharks are classified as fish.
9. Which game can you hit a single, double, triple, or even hit a home run?

Answer: baseball

Baseball consists of a field that includes an outfield and an infield, which includes four bases that are arranged in a diamond shape -- these bases are known as first base, second base, third base, and home plate. A single is obtained when a hitter hits a batted ball and is able to run to first base before making an out.

A double is earned when the hitter is able to make it to second base, a triple is earned when the hitter is able to make it to third, and a home run is when the hitter is able to make it all the way around the bases before being put out.

It is possible to reach or advance to a base on an error, so just because you reach first base, for example, doesn't necessarily mean you hit a single.
10. You might have heard of Pepsi, Coca-Cola, and Dr. Pepper. What type of tasty beverage will you be drinking if you consume one of these brands?

Answer: soda pop

Soda is made mostly of carbonated water with natural or artificial flavoring and a sweetener such as sugar, or in the case of diet soda, an artificial sweetener. The company Schweppes produced the first soft drink in 1783. Pepsi, Coca-Cola, and Dr. Pepper were all invented in the late 19th century and became among the most popular sodas in the 20th century. Soda pop is also know as "pop", "soft drink" or fizzy drinks in some countries.
