Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Chapter One: 'The Avatar State' How is General Fong able to trigger the Avatar State in Aang?

Answer: By threatening his friends

Awakening from nightmares, Aang and company sail on towards the Earth Kingdoms to learn earthbending from King Bumi. Upon arriving at the first city on their route, the Earth Kingdom's General Fong suggests that Aang use the Avatar State to attack the Firelord, even without mastering the other elements. Aang, despite being reluctant, is forced into the Avatar State and nearly destroys the city. He and the others continue on towards Omashu without Fong's assistance.

At the same time, Princess Azula heads off to locate Zuko and Iroh. She succeeds in locating them, but they escape her clutches and go into exile before she can trick them into being imprisoned on her ship.
2. Chapter Two: 'The Cave of Two Lovers' The cave is actually a tomb containing which of these?

Answer: Earthbenders

A group of nomads cross paths with Aang and the others in this episode and the encounter leads all of them through a perceived cursed cave. They make it through as the Fire Nation seals them in from behind, but a series of dangerous events separates many of them without light. On the other side of the tunnel they reach Omashu, the Earthbender capital, but the Fire Nation seems to have beaten them there.

Zuko and Iroh, meanwhile, now fugitives, get themselves into trouble when Iroh drinks a poisonous tea (leading to an allergic reaction). They're helped by a local Earthbender village where Zuko sees the Fire Nation's effect first-hand.
3. Chapter Three: 'Return to Omashu' What fake disease is created to save the people of Omashu?

Answer: Pentapox

Arriving at Omashu, Aang and the others realize that Ba Sing Se might be the only safe Earth Kingdom left. To search for King Bumi, Aang brings the group through the sewers and into the city, inventing a disease called Pentapox to trick the Fire Nation warriors.

They get as many Earthbenders out as they can, but the action leads Azula to them. She follows through with her advisors and decides to branch out with a small, elite team to hunt her family down, coming across Aang in the process. Aang manages to save King Bumi, but Bumi purposely surrenders himself, suggesting that he must be patient and wait for the right moment to strike, and sends the Avatar off to find a more suitable master to learn Earthbending.
4. Chapter Four: 'The Swamp' According to the waterbender living in the swamp, which of these stretches across the entire world?

Answer: A tree

The group flies into a swamp when Aang feels like he's being called towards it and it leads to a crash landing that splits everyone up in the dense wetland. As night falls, everyone realizes that the swamp is capable of attacking them and keeping them divided but their attempts to reunite are frequently foiled when each begins seeing visions. When they finally find each other in the center of the swamp, Aang, Katara, and Sokka discover that the swamp is a large, living being capable of showing the future since all living beings are connected to it and its central tree, suggesting that what each person saw would come back to them.

Zuko and Iroh though, begging for money, struggle with begging. It's because of this that Zuko puts on the mask of the Blue Spirit he used when he freed Aang from the Fire Nation.
5. Chapter Five: 'Avatar Day' Which previous version of the Avatar was responsible for villages creating Anti-Avatar Day?

Answer: Kyoshi

Aang stumbles upon a town claiming to have a dark past involving a previous Avatar, and the encounter leads to Aang being sent to jail (after a giant effigy in his likeness is set ablaze). It takes Katara and Sokka's prying and intense detective work to uncover the truth as it unfolded during Avatar Kyoshi's era, helping prove that the Avatar was seeking to free their leader's prisoners, creating Kyoshi Island in the process. When Fire Nation forces close in on the town, Aang helps them fight and gains their respect enough to change their minds.

Zuko, meanwhile, becomes a bandit using his Blue Spirit mask. His thieving disappoints Uncle Iroh enough that the two split up instead of finding common ground.
6. Chapter Six: 'The Blind Bandit' Is Toph actually blind?

Answer: Yes

Looking into an Earthbending academy hosted by Master Yu, Aang finds out about a local tournament (named Earth Rumble 6) and encounters a girl named Toph, known as the reigning champ, the 'Blind Bandit', who happens to look like a vision he saw in the swamp.

She wins the tournament and Aang asks to learn Earthbending from her, but he finds that her family won't let her teach. Toph further demonstrates her power by fighting off the tournament creator, Xin Fu, and she decides to run away from home to teach Aang all she knows, but it leads her family to send Xin Fu and Master Yu out to retrieve her...for a reward.
7. Chapter Seven: 'Zuko Alone' Zuko fights to protect an Earth Kingdom boy by what name?

Answer: Lee

Split off from Iroh, Zuko makes an attempt to go it alone and he comes across an Earth Kingdom Village, encountering the thuggish soldiers there. He ends up befriending a young boy who brings him to his farm to feed his steed and it's there that Zuko helps with manual labour for food.

It gets Zuko thinking about his past, his mother's disappearance in the night, his cruel sister's lies, and the circumstances surrounding his grandfather's death and father's concerning ascension to the throne. Zuko fights to protect his new Earth Kingdom friends, but his background and identity lead him to be forced out from the village altogether, even by Lee.
8. Chapter Eight: 'The Chase' What allows Azula to keep finding Aang and the others?

Answer: Appa's fur

As the group travels, Toph senses that they're being followed by the Fire Nation. It leads them to travel through the night, going without sleep. The situation leads to tension as Katara believes Toph to be selfish and unhelpful and Toph blames Appa for the chase (since he's shedding).

The Fire Nation craft turns out to be piloted by Azula and the chase ends up bringing everyone-- including Zuko and Iroh-- into the same area. In this fight, Azula manages to escape using her Firebending to make lightning. Zuko heads off with Iroh after the latter is wounded in battle while the others take the opportunity to get much-deserved sleep.
9. Chapter Nine: 'Bitter Work' While Aang learns Earthbending, Zuko is taught about lightning by who of these?

Answer: Iroh

Finally learning Earthbending from Toph, Aang must shift his mind to be less like the masterful Airbender he is.

Iroh, being tended to by Zuko, decides to resume training the prince, picking up by showing him the precise art of creating lightning. Unfortunately, as Iroh suggests, Zuko needs peace of mind to be able to Firebend in such a way. Understanding all four elements, like the Avatar, and gaining a little bit of humility, is the only suggestion he can give.
10. Chapter Ten: 'The Library' Sokka is able to determine that the Firebenders are weakest during which event?

Answer: The solar eclipse

Heading to the Misty Palms Oasis for a bit of time to themselves, Aang and the others eventually reach a library in the desert, home to vast knowledge about the world. They lie to the temple's keeper, a great knowledge spirit, and discover that the Fire Nation is weakest during the solar eclipse, but the knowledge comes at the cost of their demise.

They're just barely able to escape the library as it sinks into the sands. In the meantime, Toph fights to keep the library from sinking and allow for the others to escape, but while this happens she's helpless to stop a gang of Sandbenders from kidnapping Appa and leaving the group stranded.
