The Fire Nation capital, on the other hand, uses the Great Gates of Azulon in order to protect themselves from impending attacks. Although the Air Temples are situated on top or under mountains, they do not have a permanent fixture, such as a wall or gate, to protect the area within.

The Battle of the Wulong Forest was the final dispute in the century-long war. It was fought between Phoenix King Ozai and Avatar Aang. On the other hand, the Battle of Garsai and the Colonization of the Hu Xin Provinces both occured in the very early stages of the war. The Southern Water Tribe was never under Fire Nation control, and so it was never liberated.

Answer: The lack of earth.

Seeing as how the battle was fought in the Earth Kingdom, there was considerable amount of earth present. Crown Prince Azulon won the battle due to his strategic intelligence. By using the wind as a key part and the drought season to ensure the lack of water, the Fire Nation's forces burned the dry grass and allowed the wind to expand the fire.
