Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where did Sophie and the BFG first meet?

Answer: In the village where she lived

Sophie looked out of the window one night and saw a giant man in a black cloak walking along the street. Every so often he stopped and, as she later found out, blew nice dreams into the ears of sleeping children. This Big Friendly Giant (BFG) noticed she had seen him, so he carried her back with him to his country to stop her from telling other people about him.
2. Where did the BFG live at the start of the book?

Answer: In Giant Country

The BFG lived with other giants in a land known as Giant Country. To get there from England he had to run so fast that the landscape grew blurred and the wind howled around him. His home country looked unearthly, as it was flat and yellow with large blue rocks and dead trees. An airman later worked out that it must be located on one of the two blank pages at the end of an atlas.
3. How did the other inhabitants of his homeland treat BFG?

Answer: They bullied him

Big though the BFG was, the other nine giants who lived there were at least twice as tall and twice as wide as he was. They treated him very badly, led by the largest and nastiest one, called Fleshlumpeater. As well as calling him insulting names, they mishandled him, for instance playing 'catch' by throwing him from one to the other of them, but they would never have tried to kill him.
4. What did the nasty giants wear?

Answer: Short skirts

Although the BFG was clothed in trousers, shirt and waistcoat and wore shoes, the other giants just wore short skirts around their bottoms. They were fat, hairy and ugly with tiny eyes and noses but enormous mouths and they were very nasty beings. While the BFG ate only a particular vegetable that grew in Giant Country, the others went out every night into different countries and there they ate children and adults.
5. Why did Sophie and the BFG go to London?

Answer: To try and save people's lives

When Sophie found out giants were eating humans, she was very upset, especially about children being eaten. She wanted to stop them, so she and the BFG thought of a plan. They would go to London and get the Queen of England to have a bad dream about everything that was happening. Sophie would sit on the Queen's bedroom windowsill and, when the Queen awoke, convince her that the dream showed real-life events.
6. How did Sophie travel back to England?

Answer: She sat on BFG's ear

Sophie had been travelling in one of the BFG's pockets, but on this journey he had a jar containing a bad dream about people-eating giants in there and she refused to be near it. The BFG had very large ears which could swivel so he turned the right ear to face upwards and Sophie was able to sit very comfortably next to his earhole.

She had to be careful to only whisper very quietly, though, or else the sound hurt the BFG.
7. Why did Sophie sometimes feel cold?

Answer: She only had her nightdress to wear.

As the BFG had carried her away in the nighttime, Sophie was only wearing her nightdress, so she was cold at times. It was not too bad in Giant Country, but she felt cold when he took her to Dream Country to collect dreams, because there was no sun there and it was misty.

She was also cold when she was in London sitting on a windowsill during the night, but the sun did eventually came up and warm her.
8. How did the Queen react when she found out what was happening to her people?

Answer: Ordered the giants to be captured

The Queen was very upset by having the bad dream the BFG had created for her. She was appalled and also angry when Sophie was able to convince her that what she had dreamed was true, and that giants were eating her people and those from other countries.

The Queen ordered the army and air force to follow the BFG to Giant Country and capture the bad giants which, assisted by the BFG and Sophie, they did.
9. How did the leaders of other countries treat the BFG after the other giants were captured?

Answer: They praised him and sent him presents.

The bad giants had eaten children and adults from many of the world's countries, and their leaders were pleased when the giants were captured and imprisoned in a very deep pit from which they could not escape. The rulers sent compliments, messages of thanks and presents to the BFG, and to Sophie as well.

The Queen of England had a very large house built for the BFG to live in, and a small cottage built next to it for Sophie.
10. What career had the BFG taken up by the end of the book?

Answer: Writing

The BFG had taught himself to read and write from a book he had 'borrowed' from a human, but he had never been to school. Now he wanted to get better at reading and writing so Sophie taught him. Because he was very intelligent, he read vast numbers of books and then began to compose essays of his own, writing about his past life.

He eventually wrote a whole book, which the Queen had published.
