Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where do you put your feet to make the bike go?

Answer: Pedals

The pedals are at the sides of the bike below where you sit. You pump them around and around in a forward motion to go ahead. If you get tired of pumping the pedals, you can stop for a while to rest your legs if your speed is fast enough to keep you up on the bike. Careful, though. If you stop pumping the pedals when you are going too slow, you might fall off your bike.
2. What do most bikes have for safety, especially when riding at night?

Answer: Reflectors

Reflectors are fixed to bicycles on both the wheels and the frame of the bike. They are orange or red and are designed to reflect the light from car headlights. They help drivers see you if you are riding after dark, making it easier for them to avoid you. This makes it much safer for you.
3. What is the part that fits over the top of the tires called?

Answer: Fender

The fender is placed on some bikes over the front and back tires. They are designed to protect you from mud or water if you are out riding in the rain. The fenders will stop the spray from your tires before it reaches you. Some bikes don't have fenders, so be prepared for a soaking if you are riding one of those in the rain!
4. What do you use to steer a bike?

Answer: Handlebars

The handlebars are at the front of a bike, attached to the front wheel. The wheel turns side-to-side when you push or pull the handle on one side. Some people put a bell on their handlebars to ring while they are riding. They do that to warn others ahead that they are coming, or just for fun.
5. What are the thin pieces of metal in the middle of the tires called?

Answer: Spokes

The spokes sit between the outside part of the tire and the centre rim. Their job is to make sure that the weight of the rider and the bike is distributed evenly around the tire. This keeps the tire strong and round as you travel along over all of the bumps. If the spokes didn't support the tires, their rims would get dented and the wheel would no longer be round.
6. What part of the bike touches the ground when you ride?

Answer: Wheels/tires

The wheels or tires hit the ground as you travel along on your bike. If you are lucky, that's all that will hit the ground as you ride. If you happen to take a fall off your bike, your knees, hands, or other parts of your body could hit the ground and get scraped. Be prepared for a fall or two, especially if you are learning to ride.
7. Where does your behind go when you ride?

Answer: On the bike seat or saddle

All bicycles have what is known as a seat or saddle. That is where your bottom goes as you ride. Some people stand up to pedal their bikes faster, but they usually sit back down once they get up to speed.
8. What is the difference between a girl's bike and a boy's bike?

Answer: A girl's bike has no bar from beneath the handlebars to beneath the seat

Girls' bikes usually have a different bike frame than boys' bikes. The one in the photo for this question is a girl's bike. It has no bar from just below the seat to just below the handlebars. If this were a boy's bike, there would be an extra bar on the frame running from just below the seat to just below the handlebars.

The different girls' bikes were started many years ago when most girls wore dresses. With no higher bar, they could step onto their bikes without lifting their legs too high. Boys wore trousers, so they could swing their legs onto the bike without worrying about showing their underwear when they got on.
9. What is a cycle with three wheels called?

Answer: Tricycle

Tricycles are often the first cycle that children learn to ride. The pedals are directly attached to the front wheel, so they don't stop when you stop pushing like the ones on a bicycle. If you stop pushing the pedals, they will still go around and around until the tricycle comes to a stop.
10. What do some people put on the front of their bikes to help carry things while they ride?

Answer: Baskets

Some people put wire or wicker baskets on their bicycles. The baskets can hold almost anything, including school books, items from the grocery store, or even small pets like the one in the photo. If you do that, you have to be careful. It lets you take your pet along, but it is very important to keep pets safe by making sure that they can't jump out into traffic as you ride along.
