Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The SKIPPER of this boat might eat these smoked.

Answer: Kippers

A kipper is the name for a smoked herring (fish) popular for breakfast in America and Britain. In Britain they are usually poached in water, served with bread and butter, and sometimes also eaten for supper. Very tasty and nutritious.
2. Off to BED I GO hopping on one LEG. In the morning I'll get up and make soldiers for my ________.

Answer: Boiled egg

Some people like their boiled eggs hard but I like mine with a runny yolk so I can dip my buttered toast fingers, called soldiers, into it.
3. We USE A GAS cooker to fry this tasty looker!

Answer: Sausage

The British sausage is also known as a 'banger'. No 'full English' breakfast is complete without one.

Most breakfast sausages are made with pork. Many counties in Britain have their own speciality sausages, such as the Cumberland sausage.
4. I AM ALARMED, the cupboard is bare. What can we spread on our toast? What do we like most?

Answer: Marmalade

Marmalade is usually made from Seville oranges or from lemons but my favourite is lime marmalade.
5. We've climbed up to the PEAK of a mountain and down again. We're now hungry, mum, so CAN you show us what you're cooking in that pan?

Answer: Pancake

Pancakes are made with a batter containing milk, eggs and flour. They are more popular in the north of Britain. They're delicious covered in honey or golden syrup.
6. We don't need CLEAN FORKS to eat these, just a spoon, bowl and milk please!

Answer: Cornflakes

Cornflakes were invented over a hundred years ago by the Kellogg brothers.
Crispy flakes of corn and lashings of cold milk - delicious and nutritious!
7. We know a man called TOM OATES who grows these tasty red fruits in his coat.

Answer: Tomatoes

Tomatoes are often thought of as a vegetable but they are a fruit. Sliced and fried along with the sausages and bacon - my 'full English' breakfast would not be complete without them.

I don't think it is possible to grow them in your coat!
8. You have to look after your FIGURE so try eating PART of this for dinner. Oops! I meant to say breakfast.

Answer: Grapefruit

Grapefruit are citrus fruits and full of vitamin C. They contain very little fat and are a healthier alternative to the 'full English' breakfast.

Freshly squeezed grapefruit juice is a wonderful way to wake up!
9. Oh dear, NO time to pay for breakfast, we have a CAB to catch, so please put it on our tab.

Answer: Bacon

In Britain one slice of bacon is known as a rasher and in North America, a strip or a slice.
Bacon is usually meat taken from the sides, back or belly of a pig. It is another essential part of the 'full English' breakfast and can be fried or grilled.
10. MOM does RUSH SO. She's always on the go!

Answer: Mushrooms

Mushrooms are a fungi and you must never pick them yourself because many are poisonous.
The most common mushroom to have with your 'full English' breakfast are known as button mushrooms.
They are also delicious on toast.

A healthy and delicious breakfast could be half a grapefruit and a boiled egg or mushrooms on toast.
But it's nice to have the occasional 'full English'. So can we make it more healthy?
Yes we can!
We can grill the sausages, the bacon and the tomatoes. Instead of frying an egg, poach it. This is done by simmering the egg (without the shell) in hot water for a couple of minutes.

Then once a week we can enjoy our 'full English' :-).
