quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The chubby man piled his LEAPT high with bacon, and said to his wife, "I must go on a diet".

Answer: Plate

1. To leap up is to jump up suddenly. Leapt is the past tense of the word leap.

2. A plate, covered in delicious food, is what we use at meal times. If you're lucky, you'll escape the washing up as well.
2. Katie's cat is very MATE, but it doesn't like strangers.

Answer: Tame

1. A mate can be either a good friend, or one of a pair of something.

2. A tame animal is one that has been brought up by people and feels safe and comfortable around them. Unless of course you sit on it by mistake.
3. As the autumn FLEA blew about in the wind, the girl thought it looked very pretty.

Answer: Leaf

1. A flea is a pesky little insect that bites and makes animals or people want to scratch. Have you ever seen a dog trying to bite a flea on the end of its tail? It goes round and round in circles and looks rather funny.

2. A leaf is a beautiful part of a tree or a flower or shrub. The page of a book is also sometimes called a leaf.
4. The tired boy curled up on his bed and went to PEELS.

Answer: Sleep

1. If you peel a piece of fruit, or a vegetable, you remove its outer skin. You can also peel your clothes off before you have a bath, so you've almost removed your outer skin as well.

2. Sleep is the state of deep rest we usually fall into whenever we go to bed for the night, before waking up nice and bright the following morning. Quite a few people snore loudly when they're sleeping, so their throats certainly don't get much of a rest.
5. The boy DAME his friend a set of wooden blocks for his birthday.

Answer: Made

1. A dame is an unflattering description of a woman. It can also refer to a lady of rank in some British countries.

2. To make something is to create something else from raw materials. You could make a cake from a list of ingredients, for example. My cakes always turn out to be disasters, so I buy them already made instead.
6. "Can I NEAR some extra pocket money this week please, Dad?" asked the boy.

Answer: Earn

1. To go near anything is to get in a lot closer to that person or thing. You could stand near your desk, for example, or go to the movies at the theatre near the shopping centre.

2. To earn any reward, such as money or a toy, in this example, is to do some extra work that you will be paid for. Hopefully, anyhow.
7. "SAPS the salt and pepper please, Dylan" said Dylan's mother.

Answer: Pass

1. Saps is not a nice name that some people use to refer to other people whom they think aren't very smart. A tree also produces sap on its inside which helps keep it alive.

2. To pass some object to anybody is to hand that object across to that person. You can also pass exams for example. That means you've scored enough marks to get through - if you've studied hard enough. Learning is fun!
8. The old lady happily ate the chocolate covered STUN she had been given for Christmas.

Answer: Nuts

1. To stun someone is to give them some kind of blow or shock, with the result that the person can barely speak at all, and sometimes even becomes unconscious. You can also stun your mother by tidying up your room without being asked to do so. She won't become unconscious, but she'll be very happy and hardly able to say a word at first.

2. Nuts, delicious nuts, come in all shapes and sizes and various tastes. They're very good for you, particularly if eaten in their natural state, without being covered in chocolate or lots of salt. Grandmothers, however, can be treated to chocolate covered nuts - as long as they don't break their dentures.
9. "Now class," said the teacher. "I want you to DARE chapter one of this book for homework".

Answer: Read

1. To do something daring is usually to take a risk and attempt a risky act that, unless supervised by an adult, can have a bad result. Don't let your friends dare you into doing anything foolish, will you?

2. To read a book, or anything else on which words are printed, is to see, comprehend, and later remember what those words are all about.
10. "Your father is working too hard lately. He has lost weight and looks HINT" remarked my mother.

Answer: Thin

1. A hint about anything is a clue to the answer you're really seeking. I've given you lots of hints in the above sentences which will have helped you work out your answers.

2. To be too thin is not to have enough flesh on your body for your height and age. Being too tubby is also not good for any person. Just right is perfect. If you are worried about the way you look, speak to your parents or teacher or family doctor about it. Any of those people will set you right.
