Never, ever, EVER, accept a lift from a stranger as they could harm you. Always check with an adult first, either your parent or a teacher. If no adult is nearby, then run fast and contact the police as soon as possible. If you have time, make a note of the car details; the model and colour, and ideally the number plate as well. Get a description of the driver - male or female, young or old, blond hair or dark hair.

It is amazing what you will be able to remember in a short space of time which could help the police with their investigations.

Fires are very dangerous and can quickly move from one part of the house to another. Leave the house quickly and contact the fire brigade when you are a safe distance away. Don't spend unnecessary time collecting things before you go as the fire could spread quickly and block your escape route. Smoke is as dangerous as flames because you can breathe in toxic fumes. Speed is of the essence, so get out while you can.

Answer: Lifeguard

Your first reaction may be to dive into the water to save your friend, but you need to be very careful. They may be drowning because there is a hidden undercurrent which could drag you underneath the water as well. A lifeguard is trained to save lives in the water and they have got the proper equipment to deal with an emergency. It is best if you see where the lifeguard is situated when you get to the beach, just in case you need to flag them down urgently.

If someone has fallen off a ladder, it is best not to move them because they could have an injury which is not obvious. This could include a broken back or fractured skull. Call the ambulance service as they have special neck braces and back boards to transport people with potential spinal injuries safely to hospital for x-rays and further tests.

Stealing is theft and therefore a criminal offence that you need to report to the police. If you see someone stealing, they are taking the item without the owner's consent. You may have money in your purse or wallet and this is what thieves are after. These thieves are sometimes called pickpockets, as they pick the item from your pocket without you noticing. If you get a small bell that tinkles, and attach this to your purse or wallet, it will alert you if someone is stealing from you.

Calling an ambulance should only be done in an emergency if someone is very ill or injured. A pet kitten stuck up a tree is definitely NOT a reason to call the emergency services. Kittens like to explore and it is their natural inquisitiveness that leads them to climb, or scrabble into tight corners. It is their natural survival skills which will also usually lead them back to safety without any outside help.

There is a fault if you see smoke coming out of an engine. Stand well away as a loose spark could set the petrol tank alight, and the car will go BOOM! Phone for the fire service as they wear special fire resistant clothing and proper breathing apparatus which stops them from inhaling toxic fumes.

The coastguard is an organisation which helps with air-sea rescue. If a boat has broken down and people on board are in danger, the coast guard will send out their people to assist. They normally travel by boat, or helicopter, or both. They also assist recover animals which have accidentally fallen off the edge of a cliff. If you are walking your dog near a cliff, always stand well away from the edge and make sure the dog is on a lead.

Some drugs can save lives, but illegal drugs are dangerous and can kill. Phone for an ambulance straight away if you know somebody who has taken an excessive amount of drugs. It is just as bad if someone tries to sell you drugs. They will try and make you become addicted purely so they can earn money for their own greed. Let the police know so the bad people can be arrested and taken to prison.

All of these emergency services save lives. It is important to remember this if you need to contact them at any time. Try and remain calm, and give them the facts. Name, address and what the issue is. If you waste their time with unnecessary calls, it may be stopping someone else from needing their help; someone who is very ill and in need of life saving treatment, or someone who is in grave danger.
