Answer: nearly 10

 Almanzo would have been ten years old just over a month later.

 'He looked at the crisp. crackling little pig lying on the blue platter with an apple in its mouth. He loked at the fat roast goose, the drumsticks sticking up, and the edges of dressing curling out.'

Answer: before half past three

 Father called down to the children at half past three, after the children had opened their presents, so they had to have woken up long before then.

Answer: Alice, Ella and Peter

 Lansford, Laura and Polly were Pa's brother and sister; George and James were Pa's uncles, brothers to his father, Lansford; Lena and Gus were Laura's cousins by different uncle and aunt (and Ellie was drafted in to make all the answers three names!)

 Laura kept Charlotte all her life. There was a brief period when she belonged to the little girl who lived on a neighbouring farm when they lived on Plum Creek, but she returned to Laura. When Laura packed her trunk to leave home on her wedding day, Charlotte was carefully packed inside.
6. What did Pa give Ma that Christmas in the Big Woods?

Answer: a shelf-bracket for the shepherdess

 Along with the shepherdess, the intricately carved shelf-bracket travelled with the family across states to their final home in De Smet. No one seems certain what happened to the shepherdess.

Answer: Mr Edwards

 Christmas on the prairie was not white - it was wet. Very, very wet. Ma and Pa were working out how to make Christmas special with the white sugar when Mr Edwards appeared, having walked all the way from Independence with presents for the girls. He told them he met Santa and agreed to bring the presents with him.
8. What did Santa give the girls the Christmas they spent on the prairie?

Answer: a penny, a cup, a cake and candy

 Mr Edwards brought (we surmise) a cup and a stick of candy each, Ma would have made the cake (with white sugar) and Ma and Pa would have put the pennies in the stockings as well. Mr Edwards also brought some sweet potatoes from Independence for the whole family.
9. What present did Laura get from the Christmas Tree at Walnut Grove?

Answer: a muff and cape

 Laura had been envious of Nellie's muff, and was delighted to receive this present, especially as it came with a fur cape as well. Rev Alden said she was a little brown bird with red trimmings.

Answer: Pa being home safe and well after being lost in a blizzard

 The family agreed to have horses the Christmas before the Christmas Tree Christmas. Every year they had candy, except this one - because Pa had eaten it and the oyster crackers while he was holed up during the blizzard. He brought home the oysters though, and they had them for Christmas dinner.

 Rob and Ellie Boast arrived on Christmas Eve and the two families became friends after they spent the remainder of the winter as close neighbours.

 Pa had shot a swan by accident and Ma had made the coat with help from Mary, Laura and Carrie. 'A bit of the blue silk lining showed around Grace's face and matched her shining eyes. She touched the soft swan's-down on her wrists, and waved her hands and laughed.'
