Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Clifford the dog, raspberries and fire engines

Answer: Red

Red is one of the primary colours in painting and can be a sign of danger, of love or (in Asian countries), good fortune.

Clifford, the Big Red Dog, and his owner Emily became famous as a series of children's books and have since been shown on television, films and video games. Most fire engines and fire hydrants are red as it is the traditional colour to indicate fire. Fire engines and other emergency vehicles are sometimes painted yellow or lime green because it is easier to see.
2. Pumpkins, mandarins and carrots

Answer: Orange

Orange is a mix of red and yellow and is the sporting colour of The Netherlands.

Orange and black are the official colours of Halloween. Pumpkins may be orange or green on the outside, but the flesh is orange. Carrots are usually orange but sometimes can be purple. Mandarins are similar to a tangerine, just don't confuse them with the Chinese language.
3. A winner's medal, a Wonka ticket and an egg laid by a legendary goose

Answer: Gold

Gold is a metal with the symbol Au.

Gold is associated with winning. Winners at the Olympic Games receive gold medals. Charlie Bucket found a Golden ticket in Roald Dahl's book 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory' and won a trip into the factory. There is a story that features a goose that lays a golden egg. Gold is a popular colour of jewellery, and on the fifth day of Christmas, the song says that the gift is five golden rings.
4. Bananas, canaries and rubber duckies

Answer: Yellow

Yellow is a primary colour and is often associated with the sun. In a rainbow it is on the spectrum between orange and green.

Only ripe bananas are yellow, unripe bananas are green. Lemons are also yellow when ripe and green when unripe. Rubber duckies for playing in the bath are yellow. There is an inflatable boat called a rubber duckie, but it's usually black or dark grey.
5. Frogs, apples and broccoli

Answer: Green

Green is on the colour spectrum between blue and yellow and can be made by mixing these two primary colours.

Kermit the frog is green, but not all frogs are green. Some are brown, some are yellow and some are even blue! Be careful if you see a yellow or blue frog because it may be poisonous. Granny Smith apples are green when they're ripe and are good for pies. Broccoli and most plants are green because of the chlorophyll they contain.
6. Smurfs, Cookie Monster and a sunny sky

Answer: Blue

Blue is a primary colour and if mixed with red will make purple, with yellow it will make green.

Cookie Monster appears on the television show 'Sesame Street' and loves cookies. Smurfs are blue creatures who wear white Phrygian caps and white pants. They were created in 1958 by Belgian artist Pierre Culliford.
7. Barney, Tinky Winky and grapes

Answer: Purple

Purple is a secondary colour made by mixing red and blue.

Barney is a purple dinosaur from the television shoe 'Barney and Friends'; similarly, Tinky Winky is the purple Teletubby known for carrying a red handbag.

Plums, grapes and eggplants are purple fruits, but there are now varieties of purple carrots, cauliflower and cabbage available. Some grapes are called white but are actually green.
8. Pigs, flamingos and a famous panther

Answer: Pink

Pink can be made by mixing red and white together and is often the colour of choice for baby girls.

The Pink Panther is a diamond in a film called 'The Pink Panther' and a cartoon of the same name features an animated pink panther. Real panthers are black, not pink. Some pigs are also black but most people associate pigs as being pink, like Miss Piggy from 'The Muppets'.
9. Snow, milk and Casper the Friendly Ghost

Answer: White

White is said to have no colour, but white light is actually composed of the full rainbow spectrum of colours. Light passing through raindrops or a prism breaks up the light into its component colours.

White symbolises purity, cleanliness, good and innocence and is the opposite to black. Ghosts are typically portrayed as being white, although contrarily, not all of them are good. Peeves from the Harry Potter series is a poltergeist- a naughty ghost.
10. Bats, tar and witch's cats

Answer: Black

Black is the darkest colour and is often used to symbolise darkness and evil.

Not all cats are black, but witches are frequently pictured with a black cat called a familiar. Tar is a black sticky goo made from coal or wood and is good for sealing roads.
