1. Lord Voldemort
Answer: Harry Potter
J. K. Rowling introduces the quintessential battle of good and evil in her Harry Potter series of novels. Lord Voldemort, aka Tom Riddle, is the evil wizard with whom an indelible bond has been forged with Harry Potter.
The series was wildly successful and is responsible with fostering an interest in reading with an entire generation of children. So successful was the series, it was made into a series of movies, with the final book split into two movies.
2. Joker
Answer: Batman
Batman first appeared in DC comics in 1930 and has since been portrayed on television, movies, animated films, comic strips, books and has also made guest appearances on radio. Batman has now also been immortalised in Lego. Throughout the years his famous bat-suit has changed significantly, but retains the cape and full head cowl mask.
As only one of several villains terrorising Gotham City, The Joker is widely regarded as Batman's arch-enemy. The Joker has been described as a psychopath with a penchant for chaos and a criminal master-mind. The character has been portrayed by Cesar Romero in the 1960s television series, Jack Nicholson in "Batman" (1989) and Heath Ledger in "The Dark Knight" (2008).
3. Darth Vader
Answer: Star Wars
Darth Vader is a fictional character from the 'Star Wars' franchise. Created by George Lucas, Vader has been voted one of the greatest villains of all time. He was first seen in the 1977 episode and was played by actor David Prowse in the original trilogy. David however did not voice Vader, as his accent was wrong. James Earl Jones lent his voice to the antagonist although he requested to not have his name in the credits.
It was revealed that Darth Vader was Anakin Skywalker and he has appeared in one guise or the other in most of the eight movies, the television series, comics, literature and video games.
4. The Green Goblin
Answer: Spiderman
The Green Goblin first appeared in Marvel comics in 1964. Originally the Green guy's true identity was not known, but was later revealed to be Norman Osborn, someone who was known to Peter Parker, aka Spiderman. Spiderman eventually kills The Green Goblin, but Norman's son Harry takes up the mantle.
Other people take on the character as well until Norman is resurrected and returns once again as the Green Goblin.
5. Sauron
Answer: The Lord of the Rings
Sauron is the main antagonist of J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings' series of books. There is no description of what sort of creature Sauron is or what he looks like, but it seems he is able to change his appearance at will. In the film trilogy, he is depicted as an all-seeing 'eye' that uses the Orcs as his minions. Sauron is responsible for 'tricking' the elves into making the Rings of Power, but they are unaware that he has created a more powerful ring that controls them all.
6. The Hood
Answer: Thunderbirds
'Thunderbirds' was a puppet series created by Gerry Anderson and 32 episodes were produced between 1964 and 1966. The series revolved around the Tracy family and their secret organisation, international Rescue. The Hood, while never actually called that in the show, was given the moniker later due to his penchant for wearing disguises. The Hood (half brother of Kyrano) was desperate to take control of International Rescue and the Thunderbird machines, yet despite knowing who was behind the organisation and where their base was, he planned elaborate situations to call them out on a rescue so he could steal their secrets.
In 2004, a live action movie was made and a CGI series titled 'Thunderbirds Are Go' was released in 2015. Also in 2015 'Thunderbirds 1965' was produced using original sound recordings from 1965 and using the same supermarionation and filming techniques as the original series.
7. Wile E. Coyote
Answer: Road Runner
Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote first appeared in Loony Tunes and Merry Melodies short cartoons in 1949. The cartoons always have Coyote devising elaborate plans in his quest to catch the Road Runner, but due to poor planning or equipment failure, the tables are invariably turned and Coyote suffers at the end.
But in true cartoon fashion, he seems to be immortal, and always returns undaunted to try again.
8. Captain Hook
Answer: Peter Pan
Captain Hook first appeared in J. M. Barrie's 1904 play 'Peter Pan' and later in the 1911 novel 'Peter and Wendy'. Captain Hook is a pirate who lost his hand during a fight with Peter and had it eaten by an alligator. His hand was replaced by a hook, from whence he got his name, and the alligator developed a taste for Hook, and was forever hovering, hoping for more.
Hook and Peter Pan have appeared in several Disney adaptations, movies, video games, musicals and television series.
9. Lex Luthor
Answer: Superman
Lex Luthor is a DC Comics creation who first appeared in 1940. He is depicted as a wealthy, megalomaniac businessman who sees Superman as a threat to his plans of domination. Not satisfied with just Superman, Luthor crosses genres and takes on Batman. While not having the traditional super-powers of other villains, he has a powerful and imaginative brain and is the most intelligent character in the DC Comics world. Matched possibly only by Batman.
Luthor has appeared in television and film adaptations of 'Superman'.
10. Shere Khan
Answer: The Jungle Book
Shere Khan is a crippled tiger from Rudyard Kipling's 'The Jungle Book". Despite his deformity, and in true evil spirit, Shere Khan has Delusions of Grandeur and thinks he should be the ruler of the jungle. He begins to hunt humans to show his power over the other animals and succeeds in separating a young boy from his parents. The boy escapes from the tiger and is raised by a wolf pack, but Shere Khan is incensed after losing his prey and spends the rest of the book trying to rectify this.
The tale has been retold in several movies, including a Disney adaptation, short stories and a live action film.
