Aunt Janet suddenly announces she is to be married and is emigrating to Canada. Ten year old Fenella is very upset when she realises she isn't going, but must go to the circus to live with Uncle Ursie and Aunt Lou.

2. Whose circus is Fenella's new home?

Answer: Carl Crack's

Mr. Carl Crack looks every inch the Ring Master in his shiny boots, tall hat, and cracking his whip everywhere.
Fenella is a timid child and is quite scared of him at first.

Answer: Willie Winkie

Willie does an act as 'Willie Winkie the Whistler" in the circus ring, with Cackles his pet goose. He can imitate all the wild birds and get them to come to him. He and Fenella soon make friends, and Willie's mother 'Aunt' Aggie also takes Fenella to her heart.
The only person who isn't kind and welcoming is Aunt Lou...

Fenella has been to school regularly when she lived with Aunt Janet, and is a clever girl who enjoys her lessons. Willie however, has never been to a proper school, and can only barely read at all.
Presto is the conjurer in the circus and is an educated man. Fenella is a bit scared of him at first, but he is a very kind man, and even does magic tricks for her when she works well at her lessons.

Jimmy saw Fenella and Willie swimming in the sea, so he pulled all his clothes off and they got washed out to sea. Aunt Lou is the seamstress for the circus folk and makes and repairs all their fancy clothes to wear in the ring. She also makes the little outfits for Mrs. Connie's monkeys, but she doesn't like doing it.

When she refuses to make any more, Mrs. Connie goes to Carl Crack and he says that if Aunt Lou won't make clothes for the monkeys, she must leave his circus.
