Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who does Miss Pepper employ to give the children extra coaching and lessons during their holiday?

Answer: Mr. King

Roger and Diana missed a term of school when they had scarlet fever, and Snubby always gets a bad report because of his tricks at school, so Mr. Lynton decides they need extra lessons over the summer.
Originally Mr. Young was going to be coaching them, but when he gets appendicitis, Miss Pepper advertises for someone else, and Mr. King gets the job.
2. What is Snubby's real first name?

Answer: Peter

Everyone calls him Snubby because of his snub nose.
Snubby is Roger and Diana's cousin, and is an orphan. He spends all his school holidays staying with various relations, but likes being with the Lyntons best.
3. When the children meet Barney, almost the first thing he asks them is if they can lend him some of Shakespeare's plays to read. Which one has he already read?

Answer: The Tempest

Barney is alone in the world apart from his pet monkey Miranda, since his mother died. He is wandering the country looking for his father. He knows his father is alive, and that he used to act in Shakespeare's plays in the theatres.
He wants to read Shakespeare to get to know what his father does.
4. When Barney climbs up to the window of the Hall, how is the room inside furnished?

Answer: A children's nursery complete with toys

They realise the window behind the bars is broken when Miranda goes inside and throws down a book and a child's handkerchief. The children get a rope for Barney to climb up, and he finds everything in the room left exactly as it was when it was locked up and abandoned years before.
5. Snubby takes a dislike to the children's tutor, and plays lots of naughty tricks on him. Which of these is NOT one of them?

Answer: A pencil with a wobbly lead that won't write

Snubby wanted his dog Loony to be with him during lessons, and Mr. King agreed as long as Loony was well behaved.
Miranda sneaks in and jumps on Loony who leapt up barking and rushing around, so Mr. King bans him from the room. Snubby swears he will "pay Mr. King out" and plays lots of tricks on him.
6. Snubby plays detective and follows the children's tutor on his walk. What does he find by the stream?

Answer: A strange rowing boat with no name

Snubby follows Mr. King for miles to try and find out where he goes every afternoon on his walks. First Mr. King finds the boat and examines it. Snubby has a look too, but this lets Mr. King get out of sight and poor Snubby is lost. It takes him hours to get home and he is tired out and starving.
7. When the children look at a map, what do they notice about the stream Snubby followed?

Answer: It goes near Rockingdown Hall on the map, but not in reality

The stream where Snubby found the mysterious boat is shown as going right through the grounds, and close by Rockingdown Hall. The children have explored all round the grounds of the Hall, and they haven't seen a stream anywhere near.
8. When Barney hears strange noises in the night, where does he find the secret entrance he goes through to track them down?

Answer: In the cellars, he twists an iron ring in the wall

Barney follows the noises down to the cellars, and when he twists the iron ring, the passage opens. Barney goes down to investigate, but gets trapped underground when the entrance closes behind him.
He knows he must stay hidden from the men down there, and can't find another way out...
9. What are the 'baddies' up to in their hidden lair under the mansion?

Answer: Smuggling

The strange noises that were so frightening turned out to be the sound of the boxes and crates of smuggled goods being brought up the underground stream, shifted about, and packed and unpacked.
10. The 'baddies' try to escape through a tunnel; how is the trapdoor at the end of it hidden?

Answer: Under a pile of manure

The tunnel emerges in Daws farm. One of the men from the farm shovels a huge pile of manure over the top once the gang have gone down into the tunnel, but Roger and Snubby are hiding nearby and can tell the police exactly where it is.
