Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In polite society, what usually accompanies a saucer when serving a drink of tea?

Answer: Cup

In polite society, a drink of tea should always be served in a cup and saucer, preferably made of bone china, and never a mug. What does it say about me that I like a big mug of tea? Oh and the milk should always go in before the water.
2. What name is usually used to refer to a heavenly being with wings?

Answer: Angel

Angels are a part of most mainstream belief systems including Christianity and Islam. There have been many popular songs about angels by artists as diverse as Chance the Rapper, Beyonce and Aerosmith.
3. Cod, plaice and halibut are all types of what?

Answer: Fish

Herring is the most widely consumed fish in the world. In the USA, tuna is the most popular, especially in a sandwich with mayo. A pescetarian is someone who follows a mainly vegetarian diet but also eats fish.
4. Red admirals, swallowtails and cabbage whites are common types of which insect?

Answer: Butterfly

Butterflies are part of the order Lepidoptera, which includes moths. The largest butterfly species, the Queen Alexandra birdwing is also one of the rarest, found only in the rain forests of New Guinea. Females are larger than the males and can have a wingspan of 31 centimetres (12 inches).
5. What is molten rock called when it erupts from the mouth of a volcano?

Answer: Lava

Lava is molten rock, made up of crystals, liquid and volcanic gases which is expelled from a volcano with incredible force. During the 1999 eruption of Mount Etna in Italy, lava fountains reaching heights of 2,000 m (6,562 ft) were recorded.
6. Which vegetable is often used as a nose on a snowman?

Answer: Carrot

Carrots are normally orange but there are purple, black, yellow, white and red varieties available.
7. Which Greek god is god of the wild, shepherds and flocks, rustic music and companion of the nymphs?

Answer: Pan

Pan is depicted as a god whose top half is a man and bottom half is a goat, although he does have the horns of a goat too, so maybe he is more goat than man. A Roman myth tells of Pan having a music competition with Apollo, with Pan playing his pipes and Apollo his lyre. I could tell the rest of the story but then you wouldn't read it for yourself.
8. Of which product are stilton, cheddar and brie varieties?

Answer: Cheese

A cheese lover is called a turophile, from the Greek for cheese, "tyros" and loving, "philos". Cheese from cows, sheep and goats is common but it is also produced from the milk of animals such as reindeer, yak, horses, camels, alpacas, or if you have lots of money, donkey milk cheese from Serbia is one of the most expensive cheeses available.
9. What is the holiday period around 25th December usually called?

Answer: Christmas

Christmas is a religious celebration celebrating the birth of Jesus, but is also celebrated culturally by many non Christians. The earliest record of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th is from the year 336.
10. What is the common bond that links all of the answers to the previous questions?

Answer: Cake

All are different types of cake. Cupcakes are small single serving cakes, usually with icing on top, and angel cake is a popular UK cake consisting of three layers of sponge, one white, one yellow and one pink, with a layer of icing between each one. Fishcakes are a fish and potato patty, coated in breadcrumbs and delicious with chips while butterfly cakes are cupcakes with the top cut off, sliced in half and then stuck in the icing to resemble a butterfly's wings. Lava cake is a chocolate cake with a liquid chocolate centre and carrot cake dates back to the early 19th century when sweeteners or sugar were so expensive that people mixed carrots into the batter mix to sweeten the cake. Pancakes are made from eggs, milk and butter and are great served with cream or strawberries or lemon juice for breakfast, lunch, dinner, elevenses, supper or just as a snack between meals. Cheesecake is a beautiful creation consisting of a biscuit base topped with a mixture of cream cheese, eggs, sugar and flavouring (lemon please) with fresh fruit and whipped cream on top. Finally, Christmas cake is served at Christmas and is a very rich fruit cake, covered in marzipan and icing, with, if you're lucky a coin or two in it.
