Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Hey kids! How much do you know about the clothes you wear? Materials that clothes are made out of are called "textiles". Some come from plants, some come from animals, some are synthetic. "Synthetic" means its man-made, and not found in nature. Do you know what a man who takes material and makes it into clothes is called?

Answer: A tailor

It used to be that you'd have to make your own clothes, or your parents would make them. If you were wealthy you could hire a tailor to make your clothes. Today you can still hire a tailor, or you can go into a store which has a lot of clothes that have been made before in a factory. Then you simply try on the clothes until you find something that fits. That's a good way to do it.
2. One natural fabric is wool. Do you know where wool comes from?

Answer: A sheep

Wool comes from the fleece of a sheep. The wool is cut off ("shorn") and spun into threads which are woven into cloth. The cloth is then made into shirts and pants!
3. I have a shirt made out of silk. Silk is very soft and strong. Do you know where silk comes from?

Answer: The cocoon of a moth

Silk is made from the cocoon of the Silk Moth. It takes many hundreds of cocoons to make one shirt.
4. I also have a belt and a hat made out of the skin of an ox. Do you know what material made out of the skin of an animal is called?

Answer: Leather

Leather is strong and attractive. It is used for clothes and other things all around the world.
5. I have a towel made out of cotton. Cotton is one of the most popular of textiles. Where does cotton come from?

Answer: It grows on a cotton plant

Cotton balls grow on a bush and are picked off by hand or machine. The seeds in the ball are picked out by hand or removed by a machine called a "cotton gin". There's no such thing as a cotton goat!
6. Linen sheets and pillow cases are wonderful. Linen has been around for thousands of years. But where does linen come from?

Answer: It is derived from the flax plant

Real linen comes from the flax plant. Sometimes people refer to sheets and pillow cases as 'linen' even though they may be made of something else. There's no such thing as a linen goat!
7. One of my warmest jackets is my down jacket. Do you have a down jacket or a down pillow? The outside lining can be made of nylon or cotton or anything else. But the inside is stuffed with "down". What is down?

Answer: Feathers

Goose down and duck down keep you really warm. Those birds live in cold places so they need warm feathers to keep them warm. Would you like to hear a joke? "How do you get down off an elephant?" "How?" "You don't, you get down off a goose!" Ha ha! Get it?
8. Some materials do not come from natural sources, such as plants or animals. Some are synthetic, which means they are made by people in a laboratory or factory. Which of the following materials is synthetic?

Answer: All of these

Nylon, olefin, polyester, agamid, and glass fibers are produced by a process called "melt spinning". This causes the fiber molecules to be arranged in a certain way and makes them very strong. Lots of clothing is made from a mixture of natural fibers (which feel good) and synthetic (which are strong).
9. Do you have a cashmere sweater? Cashmere is a warm soft type of wool. It comes from the Cashmere goat! Kashmir is also the name of a place where these goats live. In what country is Kashmir?

Answer: India

It gets very cold in Kashmir in the winter so the goats have long warm fur. Cashmere wool is one of the finest and most expensive types of wool.
10. People used to make coats out of the fur of wild animals. It was hard to catch the animals sometimes, especially bears. Eventually people started to raise furry animals on farms where they could easily catch them. Can you name one animal they used?

Answer: Mink

A mink coat was very expensive. But it was soft and warm so many people bought them. Some people still raise minks but not as many as in the past. People used to hunt many different animals for their fur. So many people hunted some animals that soon all the animals were killed.

The fur seal was hunted almost to extinction. Today many coats that look like fur are actually synthetic. They're not made out of fur at all! I'll bet the animals are glad about that!
