The main reason that Shannon wants to work with disturbed people is because she enjoys telling people that she wants to work with disturbed people and impressing them. She once went to the library and checked out a big book on disturbed people. She read some of what she could understand in it, but she mostly just carried it around.

Katie, who is new to the school, meets Shannon on her first day and Shannon invites her to go on a shopping trip. When Katie gets home, she finds out that she has to babysit her younger brother that afternoon, so she goes to Shannon's house to tell her that she can't come and to give her a note with her phone number and address on it.

A man answers the door and tells Katie that Shannon is at a piano lesson. Thinking that it's Shannon's brother, Katie gives him the paper to give to Shannon, but he doesn't give it to Shannon.

Angie is his little sister who died in a car crash years ago, when she was twelve (like Shannon) and he was fourteen. He has recently been released from a mental hospital and has decided to go and find Angie, and to look in the house that they used to live in years before. He thinks that she's still alive and hasn't aged at all, and he mistakes Shannon for Angie.

He takes her to an old barn in the middle of nowhere, to hide out in. He ties her up but soon starts leaving her untied when he is there. He starts talking to her and he talks about wanting to get a house out in the country for them both to live in.

Shannon keeps on trying to convince him that she is not Angie, but he doesn't believe her, and when she shows him her cafeteria card that has her name on it, he ignores it. Eventually she decides to pretend to be Angie in order to find out what's going on, and to try to earn his trust so that she can escape.

He gives her mostly chips to eat, and once some chicken. To drink, he gives her a can of orange soda every night, because it's Angie's favorite. Shannon doesn't like orange soda, but she drinks it in order to please him and because it's the only liquid that she can get.

Katie's not going to tell the police that Shannon was kidnapped, because she doesn't know and because she thinks that the man is Shannon's brother. The kidnapper doesn't realize that, and thinks that she will tell on him, so he spies on her and then hits her with a car the next day. She goes to the hospital but she gets to go home, on crutches, a few days later.

A cop comes to talk to Katie about the hit and run, not Shannon. She told him that the car was green and that it sped up as it came toward her, so it wasn't an accident.

Mr. Gates is Shannon's and Katie's history teacher. Katie wrote a note to give to Shannon in his class, but she wasn't there so she threw it away. Mr. Gates found it and, although he finds notes a lot, he realized that it was not just an ordinary note. It has possible evidence on it so he takes it into the police station.

The note tells about her encounter with the man who she thought was Shannon's brother and about how happy she is to have found a friend on her first day of school. Mr. Gates knows that Katie's brother is only two years old, so he wouldn't be home alone and Katie would probably have left the information with whoever was with him.

The kidnapper doesn't keep Shannon tied up when he's there, so she plans to wait until he falls asleep, take one of his matches (he uses them for cigarettes), and light a fire in the hay. The fire starts, but she is unable to get away before he wakes up. When he asks her why she started the fire, she tells him that she is cold. He believes her and gets her a blanket from his car.

She remembers a park with coin operated showers. She asked him to take her there. She plans to run away while he's in the men's bathroom and find someone to help her.

On the way to the park, to take showers, the news comes on. It talks about how Katie has gone home from the hospital and how the police haven't found the driver who hit her yet. He turns away from the direction of the park and starts heading toward Katie's house. Shannon opens the door, jumps out of the car and hides in the woods. To her surprise, she hears him drive away.

Soon after her mother leaves, Katie hears someone break in. She calls the operator on the phone and gives her the address so they can send the cops over. Then the kidnapper comes into her room and threatens her with a knife.

Shannon flags down a car and gets the driver to take her to Katie's house. She tells her kidnapper that if he hurts Katie, they'll lock him up again, and if he comes out they can move to that country house he was talking about. He comes out and is arrested.
