Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these people has not helped on all three of the Walter books?

Answer: Richard Scarry

William Kotzwinkle, an author of all sorts of books, and Glenn Murray, who works in educational technology, are the co-authors of the Walter books, though they were helped out by Elizabeth Gundy who finally received credit on "Rough Weather Ahead", the third book in the series. Audrey Colman has done the pictures for all three books. Richard Scarry has written his own series of excellent children's books.
2. The first book in the series, "Walter the Farting Dog", begins with Walter coming home with Betty and Billy. Where did Betty and Billy get Walter?

Answer: The dog pound

According to Betty and Billy, "Nobody wanted him." Very soon the family would discover the reason why!
3. After Walter joined the family, Mother and Father quickly realized that Walter's awful smell did not come from his being dirty. How did the family determine the true source of their new pet's odor?

Answer: From bubbles in the water while they were giving Walter a bath

Colman's pictures of this dicovery are very funny! The family's bathroom has a picture on the wall of a man holding his nose, while the mother sprays a can of "fart buster" and Billy tries to scrub the smell from Walter's tail.
4. It soon became obvious that Walter farted all the time - when he played with Billy and Betty, when he walked around the house, even when he slept. Quite sensibly, Father had the kids take Walter to the veterinarian. What did the vet prescribe?

Answer: A change in diet

It is important to remember that Walter is just a character in a story and that excess gas can be treated in most dogs. Veterinarians recommend that you serve a gassy dog smaller meals to prevent the gulping of too much air, change to a low-fiber diet, and avoid serving table scraps. If these do not work, consult your vet. Also, a sudden increase in farting accompanied by abdominal discomfort and diarrhea can be signs of a serious problem. If this happens, take your dog to the vet immediately!
5. The family does what the vet recommends, but it doesn't help. If anything, Walter farts more. Father finally tells Betty and Billy that Walter must go to the dog pound. Betty and Billy cry all night, pleading with Walter to stop farting. Understanding how serious the situation was, Walter vows to hold his gas in forever. That night, however, he gets hungry and goes to the kitchen to get something to eat. What does Walter find?

Answer: The vet's low-fart dog biscuits - that make him fart even more!

Walter knew what the consequences of this would be, but he couldn't resist because the treats were so tasty. He ate the whole bag, and trouble ensued.
6. After his nighttime snack, Walter gets so gassy that he fears for the safety of the house if he lets his gas go. What happy ending comes of Walter's unbearable condition?

Answer: His monstrous fart stops two burglars from robbing the house, causing them to flee, blinded, into the headlights of a police car

Of course, after such a heroic act, Father changes his mind and claims Walter as part of the family. The book ends with Walter's gas powering an amusement park!
7. The second book in the Walter series, "Trouble at the Yard Sale", opens with Father wondering why the family hasn't sold anything at the community yard sale. Of course, the reason is pretty obvious - Walter has come with them, and has been farting happily all day. When Betty and Billy go for ice cream, Father sells Walter! How much does father get for him?

Answer: $10, leash included

It seems that Father has forgotten how Walter saved all the family's belongings in the first book. He also seems to ignore how all dogs have little problems, including the Bichon Frise who is lifting his leg all around the yard sale and taking one of the family's dog biscuits!
8. Walter's new owner was obviously not interested in having a nice dog as a pet. Instead, he hooked Walter up to a fart-catcher where he could not move! He also fed Walter a steady diet of only one food. What food was this?

Answer: Beans

Animal cruelty of this sort is, unfortunately, not always make-believe. Many irresponsible breeders abuse female dogs in what animal rights activists call "puppy mills", producing puppies more rapidly than is safe for either the puppies or their mothers. For this reason, you should think twice about buying puppies from pet stores, since many pet stores do get their dogs from puppy mills. Adopting a dog from a shelter, like the family in the Walter books does, is probably a better bet!
9. It turns out that the man who bought Walter was an evil clown who wanted to use Walter's talent to rob banks. How did the clown do this?

Answer: He took some balloons Walter had filled with the fart-catcher to the bank and popped them, overwhelming the bank's staff and security guard

The clown's threat to pop more balloons forced the bank's manager to give the clown a bag filled with $100 bills! The clown then fled the scene in his "fun-mobile".
10. All the time that the clown was robbing banks, Walter thought that his efforts were going to a good cause. How did Walter find out that the clown was using his gassy talents to do bad things?

Answer: He saw a report of the bank robbery on TV

Walter had assumed he was filling balloons for children's parties. When he realized that he had been "farting his heart out for crime", he was very ashamed.
11. Walter finally escaped from the clown, running back home with the bag of money and leading the police back to the clown. How did Walter get free?

Answer: The clown ignited Walter's gas with his cigar, exploding the fart-catcher and sending the clown flying through the TV screen

Walter's help in catching the evil clown earned him a big party and a citation from the mayor, who called Walter "a true hero for our time".
12. The third book in the series, "Rough Weather Ahead for Walter the Farting Dog", begins with a mysterious Professor Kompressor coming to evaluate Walter and his "problem" (which, according to Betty and Billy, isn't a problem at all). How does Walter react to Professor Kompressor?

Answer: He liked him and licked his hand

After being farted on by Walter, Professor Kompressor exclaimed that Walter had the highest gas meter rating he'd ever recorded and that this dog was a remarkable animal. As the book says, "Walter was pleased to be called remarkable. He liked Professor Kompressor and licked his hand."
13. Professor Kompressor formulates a high-tech blend of dog food that he claims will help with Walter's gas. At first it does not seem to work, and Walter's farts are worse than ever. Finally, though, Walter's food mix is adjusted, and his problem seems to be gone forever. Who changes this mix of Walter's food?

Answer: Father

At first, all seems to be well. Father even hugs Walter, something he'd never dared do before. However, as the story goes, "inside Walter, gas was building up slowly."
14. The bad effects of Walter's new food become apparent as Walter appears to gain weight. Of course, Walter isn't getting fat, the gas is welling up inside of him. Over time, he begins to take little bounces when he walks across the room, eventually even floating above Father's chair. One day, he gets so filled with gas that he floats into the air and cannot get down! He floats above the town for days, lonely and cold. Finally, he sees a tragic circumstance that forces him to take action. What causes Walter to finally force himself to get rid of his gas?

Answer: A large group of butterflies whose wings had been frozen on the way to their winter home are falling to the frozen lake below, and only Walter's "blast of warm gas" can thaw them and carry them to a warmer area

Large migrations like these are not uncommon in many species of butterflies, especially in northern climates where butterflies cannot survive the winter.
15. Rid of the gas that kept him in the air, Walter plummets earthward, breaking his fall in a pond. Who gives Walter a hero's welcome after he doggy-paddles to shore?

Answer: A forest ranger, who salutes him as a "wonder dog"

All three Walter books have made the "New York Times" and "Publishers Weekly" bestseller lists. The first Walter book made it to number one on the "New York Times" list, and stayed in its top ten for nearly a year!

Thanks for playing! If you have any questions, comments, or corrections, please feel free to send them. Also, if you have any ideas about what breed Walter is (I think he's a Corgi mix myself), please let me know.
