Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Traditionally served with cream at Wimbledon during the annual tennis championship, what is this delicious fruit?

Answer: Strawberry

The first garden strawberries were grown in the 1750s in Brittany, France. Today, they are grown worldwide and can be eaten fresh or used to make jams, ice cream, pies and many other desserts.
2. Common to the tropical regions of the world, which fruit might you throw balls at in a British fairground to win a prize?

Answer: Coconut

Coconuts are part of the daily diet for many people in tropical regions. Because they also contain large amounts of liquid, they are often also harvested for drinking.
They are used at the 'coconut shy' at British fairgrounds. The player buys balls (similar to a baseball) and throws them as hard as he/she can to knock the coconut off its perch. Winning the prize, though, is not as easy as it looks.
Dried coconut husks are often used feeders, or as homes for birds and small rodents.
3. This fruit which is native to south/southeast Asia is the national fruit of India and comes from the national tree of Bangladesh. What is this fruit that rhymes with a popular South American dance?

Answer: Mango

The ripe mangoes that you find in your supermarket range in color including yellow, red, orange, green and a combination of those colors. The photograph shows what mangoes look like whilst still on the tree, and unripe. In the Philippines, for example, unripe mangoes are eaten with fish sauce and a dash of salt.
The fruit of a mango has a texture not unlike a cantaloupe or avocado. Generally sweet, mangoes are often used to make fruit drinks and smoothies, but they can also be used in conjunction with savory items such as hot chili sauce.
4. Someone connected with this fruit ruled "The Land of Sweets" in a work by Tchaikovsky. What is this fruit that often appears to be covered in a dusty white coating?

Answer: Plum

Plums have a distinctive smooth peel that often feels waxy. There are some 40 species of plum worldwide, but the vast majority of those found in our supermarkets are of either the European or Japanese type.
The Tchaikovsky character was the Sugar Plum Fairy, who features in Act 2 of his ballet, "The Nutcracker". When plums are dried, they are called prunes.
5. Originally called "forbidden fruit", this fruit was originally grown in Barbados. Despite its name, you cannot make wine from it. Which fruit is often eaten or drunk as a juice at breakfast?

Answer: Grapefruit

Despite its name, the grapefruit is a tropical citrus fruit and totally unrelated to grapes, the primary source of wine. An oblate sphere with yellow-orange skin, the acidic, segmented flesh of the grapefruit can be white, pink or red. The redder the flesh, the sweeter it tends to be.
6. Native to North America, this fruit can be boiled, baked, steamed or roasted and is also a popular ingredient in soups, purees and pies. Which fruit might you also cut eyes into in order to make a lantern from it?

Answer: Pumpkin

A member of the squash family, pumpkins are round, with smooth, slightly-ribbed orange skin. A versatile food ingredient, virtually all parts of the pumpkin plant is edible including the shell of the fruit itself, the seeds, the leaves and even the flowers.
Pumpkin pie is part of the traditional Thanksgiving dinner in the U.S. Just a few weeks before Thanksgiving, pumpkins can be seen in their thousands, carved into "jack o'lanterns" for Halloween.
7. Native to southeast Asia, this fruit is regarded in that region as "the king of fruits". Which fruit is unwelcome in many hotels because of its distinctive aroma?

Answer: Durian

One of the world's largest fruits, the durian often grown to about 12 inches high and six inches in diameter and weighs in at as much as 6-7 pounds. The exterior of the durian is a thick, thorn-covered green-brown husk which may be oblong or round. Inside, the flesh ranges from yellow to red. The edible flesh of a durian gives off a very strong aroma that can be smelled even when the husk is unbroken. Most people find the smell revolting, describing it as like rotten onions or raw sewage. (Some people actually like the smell too, apparently.) It is for this reason that you will often see signs on buses, trains and in hotels saying "No Durian, Please".
8. Although now grown around the world, this fruit is native to Indo-Malaya and Australia. Which fruit is sometimes served 'split' with ice cream?

Answer: Banana

Sometimes also called 'plantains', bananas come in a variety of size, firmness and colour, ranging from green (when on the tree, as pictured), yellow, red, purple and brown as they get more and more ripe. Usually eaten as a dessert/sweet, bananas can also be used to make wine and beer.
A 'banana split' is a popular dessert and in the late 1960s there was also a US TV series called "The Banana Splits Adventure Hour" which featured a rock band made up of a four funny animal characters named Fleegle, Bingo, Drooper and Snorky.
9. Also sometimes called 'granadilla', this fruit is native to South America. Which fruit sounds like it might be hot and steamy?

Answer: Passionfruit

Passionfruit are quite small, either round or oval in shape, and are either yellow or purple when ripe. The juicy interior is filled with numerous seeds. Passionfruit can be eaten on their own or added to fruit salad, but are most often juiced. The juice is also often mixed with other fruits, such as orange.
10. This fruit was developed in California from varieties of blackberry and raspberry. Most often used in jams or pies, what is this fruit that sounds like it might have come from a Canadian mountain?

Answer: Loganberry

Despite the name, there is no connection between the loganberry and Canada's highest mountain, Mount Logan. The fruit was named for the horticulturist who developed it, James Logan.
In the world of food, loganberries can be interchanged for blackberries or raspberries in any recipe. Most often used to make jams, preserves and pies, loganberries are also used to make country wines and fruit punches in some parts of the world.
