The fruit lychee can either be pronounced lie-chee or lee-chee. It is a red fruit with a rough skin, and when you peel this away, you get soft white flesh inside which is sweet and juicy. The fruit can also be bought in cans from a shop, similar to pineapple, peach and mandarin.

The durian is known as the smelliest fruit in the world. The spiky outer skin hides a soft fruity centre which resembles a creamy custard-like pulp. It tastes like a rotting sewer, with a mixture of boiled onions and smelly socks!

The dragon fruit, or pitaya, grows on a cactus-type tree native to Mexico, but is now also grown elsewhere in the world including in Australia and Europe. Inside the green and red coloured skin is a white fruity flesh with crunchy black seeds similar to kiwifruit.

Ugli fruit are very ugly looking! They were introduced when three other fruits were cross-bred together; grapefruit, pomelo and mandarin orange. The result was a large wrinkly citrus fruit with sweet and juicy segments inside.

While technically a legume, the tamarind is a tree which grows its fruit in pods which are similar in outer appearance to a monkey nut. This is where the similarity ends as inside the pod is fleshy brown pulp with tamarind seeds. The fruit is sour tasting and is used to make jam and chutney, or can be made into a paste or spice which is added to Asian cooking.

The prickly pear cactus is grown in Mexico, South America and hot regions of western America. The plant has barbed spines so can be quite dangerous and care needs to be taken when harvesting the fruit. Each plant has pads, and the fruit grow on the end of each pad. The fruit can be eaten raw but most people prefer it when they are added as a flavouring to sweet and savoury food.

A kumquat is an Asian oval-shaped fruit which looks like a small orange. They are unlike other citrus fruit in that the flesh of kumquat is sour and bitter but the rind is very sweet. They can be eaten whole or the skin removed and just the flesh eaten.

The common name for Psidium guajava is guava. They are grown in the tropical climates of Mexico, Central and South America. It is a smallish fruit with a green skin and pink or white flesh which tastes like a mixture of pear and strawberry.

Answer: Rambutan

The name rambutan is taken from the Malay word "rambut" meaning "hairy". It is about the same size as a golf ball and once the fruit has been cut open, the white flesh inside can be eaten raw or cooked. It has a rich and creamy taste which is also refreshing. Eating the large seed inside is not recommended.

Mangosteen look like very large purple plums. The outer skin is gently squeezed open and inside there are white edible segments which taste of strawberry, peach and vanilla ice cream. The fruit grows on trees in warm parts of Asia and America.
