Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This Australian bird, which is sometimes kept as a pet, has a name that is a mixture of a striped animal and a small songbird.

Answer: Zebra finch

The zebra finch can be found throughout almost all of mainland Australia. It is a small, seed-eating bird normally growing to 10 - 12 centimetres. It has black and white stripes on the tailfeather, and thin black stripes on its pale grey throat and chest. These markings are why it is called a zebra finch.
2. If you were to cross the largest mammal on Earth with a sea creature that has sometimes been called a maneater, you would end up with which really big fish?

Answer: Whale shark

The whale shark is the world's biggest fish and is usually found in the warmer tropical ocean waters throughout the world. Even though the name sounds scary, they are a fairly gentle giant and will even allow humans to interact with them. The largest confirmed whale shark to have been caught was measured at more than 12 metres long.

They have pale yellow spots over their bodies that are as unique as human fingerprints.
3. The baddie from 'Little Red Riding Hood', when combined with the critter that frightened 'Little Miss Muffet', would produce what eight legged animal?

Answer: Wolf spider

There are many types of wolf spiders throughout the world and they can be found on every continent except for Antarctica. They range in size from a very tiny one millimetre up to three centimetres. They are generally considered to be harmless to humans but will bite if provoked. The female wolf spider carries her egg sac around with her and when the baby spiders hatch they climb up her legs and stay on her back or belly until they are old enough to look after themselves.
4. Watch out for this highly venomous reptile which has a name that is a cross between one of the big cats and an animal that slithers and hisses.

Answer: Tiger snake

On many lists of the world's deadliest snakes, the tiger snake is ranked at number five. Tiger snakes can have different colourings depending on the region they come from, but are most commonly black with yellowish bands. They like to live in areas where they have access to water, such as near creeks, rivers and lakes, but during times of dry weather have been found in suburban yards searching for a drink. If you ever see a snake around your home, do not touch it or try to catch it. Let a grown up know so they can call a professional snake catcher.
5. If you take a marsupial that is well known for hopping and mix it with a small, cheese eating rodent, you will have the name of what small desert animal?

Answer: Kangaroo mouse

There are two different types of kangaroo mice and both are found in the dry desert areas of the United States. Unlike other mice which use all four legs to move around, the kangaroo mouse hops about on its two back legs, just like a kangaroo. They are nocturnal animals, coming out to feed during the cool of the night, while days are spent inside their burrows to avoid the desert heat.
6. The name of what type of big bug is the result of crossing an animal that you can ride and an annoying insect that is said to spread germs?

Answer: Horse fly

There are more than 4,500 different types of horse flies found throughout the world. They are generally much larger than the common house fly and many can deliver a nasty and painful bite which is sometimes responsible for spreading disease. In some parts of Canada the horse fly is known as the bull dog fly. Wow, a triple-barreled animal name.
7. Take an eight-legged creepy-crawly and combine it with an animal that loves bananas and you should have yourself the name of an animal that likes to swing in the trees.

Answer: Spider monkey

Spider monkeys are found in the tropical rainforest areas of South and Central America and as far north as Mexico. They prefer to live in the top layer of trees and use their long arms and legs, as well as their tails, to travel. They live in groups of thirty or more and mostly eat fruit. Six of the seven different types of spider monkeys are listed as either endangered or critically endangered due to the loss of their rainforest homes.
8. If you were to cross one of the big cats that has spots with a mammal that is happy both in and out of water, the name of which creature, who likes the ice of Antarctica, would you create?

Answer: Leopard seal

The leopard seal is most commonly found in Antarctica but it can also be found on the southern coastlines of Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and South America. It is the second largest seal to be found in Antarctica after the elephant seal, (another double-barreled animal). It is the black spots on the throat area of the leopard seal that give it its name.
9. Cross a big African animal that has a horn on its head with an insect that comes in many sizes and colours and you will have the name of a big bug that also has a horn.

Answer: Rhinoceros beetle

There are more than 300 known species of rhinoceros beetles worldwide with one growing to a length of up to 18 centimetres. They prefer to live in forested areas where they feed on fruit and rotting leaves and bark from the forest floor. It is only the male rhinoceros beetle that has horns.

Some have just one horn on either the head or throat area, while others have both of these horns. It is considered the world's strongest animal as it can lift up to 850 times its own weight.
10. Take a fluttering insect that looks like a moth and combine it with one of the most common animals found in the ocean and you should have the name of a colourful little swimmer.

Answer: Butterfly fish

Butterfly fish are a very common sight in tropical waters and there are more than 100 known types. They come in a large variety of bright colours and different patterns. They do not normally grow more than 20 centimetres in length. At night they prefer to hide in rock crevices where they lose all of their bright colourings and blend in with the rock for protection.
