1. What street is in the title of Dr Seuss's first published book?

Answer: Mulberry Street

'And to Think That I Saw it on Mulberry Street' was published in 1937. We follow young Marco's increasingly imaginative fantasy of what he saw on a walk. However, when he gets home he tells his father what he actually saw - a horse and cart.
2. Which character had 500 hats?

Answer: Bartholomew Cubbins

One of the few Dr Seuss books which is not written in rhyme, this 1938 story tells of Bartholomew's difficulty in removing his hat as an act of deference when King Derwin is passing by. Each time he takes his hat off, a new one replaces it! things get complicated, but work out well in the end.

Morris McGurk featured in 'If I Ran the Circus', Gerald McGrew in 'If I Ran the Zoo', and Peter T. Hooper in 'Scrambled Eggs Super!'.
3. Who is the elephant who tried to hatch an egg?

Answer: Horton

'Horton Hatches the Egg', published in 1950, sees kindly Horton agree to look after Mayzie's egg, not realising she plans a permanent departure. He keeps his promise, despite the challenges, repeating, "I meant what I said, and I said what I meant. An elephant's faithful, one hundred percent!"
4. What kind of animal was Thidwick, who found himself encumbered with a lot of guests residing in his antlers?

Answer: Moose

'Thidwick the Big-Hearted Moose' was published in 1948. Thidwick originally gives a bug permission to make its home in his antlers - no problems there, but the but starts inviting in others, who invite more friends. Thidwick keeps playing host, even when the woodpecker drills holes in his antlers, and the 435-pound bear makes it hard to move, until he faces death from trophy hunters. Fortunately, he realises that it is the season for shedding his antlers, and does so, leaving his ungrateful guests to their fate.
5. Who stole Christmas in a 1958 classic from Dr Seuss?

Answer: the Grinch

'How the Grinch Stole Christmas' has been adapted for television, radio, live theatre, movies - you name it, someone has used the medium to tell the story of how a sad, lonely character who hates Christmas because others enjoy it comes to realise he can be part of it all. (He didn't actually manage to steal Christmas, of course - stealing all the presents from Whoville turned out not to be an effective way of eliminating the holiday.)
6. Which character in 'The Cat in the Hat' is rightly suspicious of the cat's actions?

Sally and her brother are on their own, and bored, so the arrival of the Cat with his ideas for fun activities is welcome. At first. Their pet fish warns them that it is not a good idea, but the antics of the Cat and his friends Thing One and Thing Two do alleviate the boredom!
7. Who is the king of the turtles?

Answer: Yertle

'Yertle the Turtle and Other Stories', published in 1958, included the story of Yertle deciding that his throne (a stone in the pond) was not grand enough, and making his subjects stand on each other to raise him ever higher - until they collapse. It also includes the tale of 'Gertrude McFuzz', a bird who learned the hard way to be satisfied with her body as it is, and 'The Big Brag', a boasting competition between a rabbit and a bear.
8. What color are the eggs that Sam-I-Am insists are delicious?

Answer: Green

'Green Eggs and Ham' was published in 1960, and it turns out that Sam-I-Am was right - when the nameless narrator finally gives in, the dish is found to be quite satisfactory. The entire book was written using only 50 different words, and only one of them (anywhere) has more than one syllable.
9. Finish the title of a Dr Seuss book: 'I Had Trouble in Getting to _____________'.

Answer: Solla Sollew

The protagonist is headed for Solla Sollew, a city whose citizens are reputed to be free of cares. After encountering various difficulties along the way, he arrives to find the gate to the city is locked, and cannot be opened. Rather than looking for another haven, he decides to go home and face problems squarely instead of running away from them.
10. Which Dr Seuss book is about caring for the environment, with a title character who speaks for the Truffula trees?

Answer: The Lorax

The Lorax kept warning the Once-ler that his careless exploitation of the trees was destroying the lives of all who lived in the forest, but the Once-ler didn't listen until the last tree had been chopped down, and his factory had to close because there was no more raw material available to make more Thneeds.
