Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "Fantastic Mr. Fox" by Roald Dahl, where does Mr. Fox live with his family?

Answer: In a hole in a hill under a big tree

Mr. Fox and his family live in a hole and tunnel system under the big tree on the hill. This is in the woodland, safely beyond the farms of the nasty farmers, or so he thinks. He soon finds out that he is wrong.

Mr. Rat the water rat, who is one of the heroes of "The Wind in the Willows," lives in a hole in the riverbank. His friend Mole calls him Ratty.

The hole that goes straight down, with cupboards and shelves on either side belongs to the white rabbit. This is the hole Alice falls down at the beginning of "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland."

Mr. Bilbo Baggins, a very respectable hobbit (and at the beginning of the story a rather stuffy one), lives in a hole (or rather an underground house) in a hill, that has a lovely, green door with a shiny brass doorknob right in the middle. You can read about his adventures in "The Hobbit."
2. In "Fantastic Mr. Fox" by Roald Dahl, there are three nasty farmers who hate Mr. Fox and have it in for him. What are their names?

Answer: Farmer Boggis, Farmer Bunce and Farmer Bean

In the cast of characters at the beginning of the book Farmer Boggis is named as a mean man, Farmer Bunce is named as a nasty man and Farmer Bean is named as a beastly man. All in all, they aren't very nice.

Surprisingly, Hogg and Head are real last names. Haggis isn't a name at all though. It is a large, sausage-like meat dish that is popular in Scotland.

Though Bacon is, surprisingly, a real last name, it comes as no surprise at all to find that pancake and sausage aren't. All three are names of yummy breakfast foods - but, you knew that.
3. In "Fantastic Mr. Fox" by Roald Dahl, the three nasty farmers are angry because Mr. Fox raids their farms and steals specific things. What does he steal?

Answer: Chickens from the first farmer, ducks and geese from the second, and turkeys from the third

Farmer Boggis is a chicken farmer, Farmer Bunce raises ducks and geese and Farmer Bean's farm is devoted to turkeys and apples. He makes cider from his apples, but Mr. Fox never did pay much attention to the cider until the crisis caused by the farmers' attack on him and his home.
4. What do the three nasty farmers In "Fantastic Mr. Fox" by Roald Dahl want to do to Mr. Fox?

Answer: Kill him

To be fair, the farmers have reason to be angry with Mr. Fox. He does raid their farms, after all. But their reaction seems extreme.
5. Of the choices listed below, which is *not* a tool or method used by the nasty farmers In "Fantastic Mr. Fox" by Roald Dahl to get Mr. Fox?

Answer: Flooding his home

They try to shoot Mr. Fox. But, even though all three of them shoot at the same time at the same place, all they manage to do is to shoot off poor Mr. Fox's beautiful tail. They try digging with ordinary shovels, but Mr. Fox and his family dig too deep. Finally they bring tractors with mechanical diggers attached to them, but Mr. Fox and his family dig right away from their original home and find a safe place to live.

The farmers do not try flooding the foxes' home. If they had done that, the story might have ended very differently!
6. In "Fantastic Mr. Fox" by Roald Dahl, what plan does Mr. Fox finally come up with to keep his family from starving when the three nasty farmers first destroy his front door and then demolish his home?

Answer: He and his children tunnel under the first farmer's Chicken House Number One, the second farmer's giant storehouse and the third farmer's secret cider cellar.

It takes a lot of work and an amazing sense of direction underground, but Mr. Fox tunnels straight to Farmer Boggis' Chicken House Number One, then to Farmer Bunce's Giant Storehouse and finally to Farmer Bean's Secret Cider Cellar. They find chickens in the chicken house, many good things to eat in the storehouse and cider, in the cellar.

As everybody knows, cider is very good for foxes.
7. In "Fantastic Mr. Fox" by Roald Dahl, what friend do Mr. Fox and the small foxes meet while they are tunneling in search of food?

Answer: Badger

In the cast of characters at the beginning of the book, Badger is named as "the most respectable and well behaved animal in the district." By contrast, Rat is named as "a rude creature and a drunkard." Indeed, Mr. Badger acts in a friendly, helpful manner, whereas Rat is no friend of Mr. Fox and Mr. Badger! When they come to Bean's cider cellar, he shouts at them and tries to keep them out so he can have all the cider for himself.

He is greedy and selfish, and he does not plan for the future like Mr. Fox does.

The weasels and moles are friends of Mr. Fox and Mr. Badger, but they do not meet them during the tunneling expedition.
8. While Mr. Fox and his helpers are searching for food in "Fantastic Mr. Fox" by Roald Dahl, why does the smallest fox suggest they take carrots?

Answer: Their friends the rabbits cannot eat meat, so they need to bring back vegetables as well.

Mr. Fox's expedition changes when he meets Mr. Badger and his son. Instead of only finding food for his own family's immediate needs, the goal becomes finding a reliable source of food for all the small animals who have been trapped by the farmers' war on the foxes.

When the smallest fox suggests collecting carrots, Mr. Fox first rudely calls him a twerp. But once he explains, Mr. Fox becomes very proud of his youngest child saying, "What a thoughtful little fellow you are."
9. Who first declares Mr. Fox to be a fantastic fox in "Fantastic Mr. Fox" by Roald Dahl?

Answer: Mrs. Fox

From the beginning Mrs. Fox has great faith in her husband and tells the children that their father is a fantastic fox. At the end of the book she states her opinion publicly at the feast.
10. Do the nasty farmers in "Fantastic Mr. Fox" by Roald Dahl ever catch Mr. Fox?

Answer: No

Farmer Boggis, Farmer Bunce and Farmer Bean are not only stubborn but also confident. They are quite sure that Mr. Fox must come out soon. The last we see of them, they're still waiting.
