Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What illness has Anne's mother got?

Answer: Scarlet fever

It is George's first time at boarding school. George was going to stay with her cousins but now her cousins are coming to Kirrin for the Christmas holidays. Julian and Dick have both been ill, and fallen behind in their schoolwork so Uncle Quentin is hiring a tutor for them, for the holidays. George knows that she will have to have extra lessons too.
2. What time is the tutor arriving the next day, by train?

Answer: 1030 am

Uncle Quentin has hired a Mr Roland, who is older than the other applicants. Uncle Quentin wants the children to meet him at the station the next. He warns them to work hard for Mr Roland. Only Anne doesn't need extra lessons. George says if she can't have Timmy with her while she is doing lessons, she won't do any at all.
3. What is the name of the old couple that live at Kirrin Farm?

Answer: Sanders

Julian and Dick meet their new tutor while the girls wait by the pony trap. Timmy seems to take an instant dislike to the tutor and ignore him. Mr Roland says he does not like dogs and calls George by her proper name, Georgina. Uncle Quentin and Mr Roland seem to get along very well together, Mr Roland is interested in Uncle Quentin's work. Kirrin Farm belongs to Aunt Fanny.

The children go to see the Sanders. They have two artists staying for Christmas.
4. Where does the cat hide from Timmy?

Answer: On top of the Grandfather clock

The Sanders are very pleased to see the cousins. Timmy chases the cat into the hall and knocks against a secret panel, revealing a dark hole. There is also a cupboard with a false back, in one of the rooms, which the artists are staying in.
5. Who finds the old book in a hole behind the secret panel?

Answer: Dick

Dick goes for another look in the secret panel and finds a hole behind the panel. He discovers a very old recipe book, belonging to Mr Sanders great grandmother. Julian also finds an old tobacco pouch. Inside the pouch is a piece of linen with what seems to be a secret code on it. Mrs Sanders says the children can have the linen, she will have the book and Mr Sanders will have the tobacco pouch.
6. How many squares are there on the piece of linen?

Answer: 8

Julian says it looks like Latin on the linen but they can't read it. They don't want to ask anyone's help. They think that two words on it say "Secret Way".
7. Who says "Very peculiar indeed"?

Answer: Mr Roland

The children and Timmy go for a walk with Mr Roland. Timmy ignores the tutor and George is sulky because the tutor insists on calling her Georgina. He also says Timmy is a mongrel. The children mention the secret panels in the farmhouse to Mr Roland, but not the piece of linen.
8. Where do Aunt Fanny and Uncle Quentin wrap up presents on Christmas Eve?

Answer: Study

Everything is ready for Christmas. Mr Roland is popular with everyone, except George and Timmy. Julian shows the piece of linen to the tutor, against George's wishes. The linen has "Secret Way" on it. It seems to indicate a room, facing east, with eight wooden panels, with an opening in one.

It also mentions a stone floor and a cupboard. The children think this indicates Kirrin Farm and they plan to go there, to find it, after Christmas. Mr Roland says he'll come and help. Julian is uncomfortable, as he knows George won't come if Mr Roland does.
9. Where does George find Mr Roland?

Answer: In the study

After the excitement of Christmas day, everyone goes to bed. Timmy growls in the night, hearing someone downstairs. George goes to investigate and finds Mr Roland in her father's study. Timmy tries to attack the tutor and brings Uncle Quentin to the scene. Mr Roland explains that he heard a noise and came down to see what was going on. Uncle Quentin is very disappointed in George and Timmy.

He says Timmy is to live in the outside kennel as a punishment. The next day, Anne, Dick and Julian goes to Kirrin Farm to try and find the secret way. Mr Roland joins them later. George goes off with Timmy.

The children meet the two artists, Mr Wilton and Mr Thomas. The children find nothing of interest. Later, George says she saw Mr Roland talking to two men while she was out. From her cousin's descriptions of the artists, it sounds like them.

But her cousins say that Mr Roland did not know the artists, they had to be introduced to him.
10. What time did Uncle Quentin come to ask Mr Roland how the lessons were going?

Answer: 6 pm

Timmy is still not allowed in the house and it looks like snow. The cousins persuade George to be really nice to Mr Roland. If Mr Roland gave her father a good report, the cousins would ask for Timmy to come indoors. George is very good indeed, and Mr Roland gives Uncle Quentin a good report.

The children ask about Timmy, and Uncle looks as if to agree, Mr Roland looks annoyed and says Timmy should stay out of the house for a week. After all, George has been good for only one day.
11. How many pages of Uncle Quentin's work have disappeared?

Answer: 3

George is upset that Timmy keeps coughing. In the middle of the night she brings Timmy into the house, into her father's study where there is still a fire. She rubs the dog's chest with camphorated oil and falls asleep until morning with her beloved dog. George doesn't do lessons the next day, she goes off with Timmy. Uncle Quentin is annoyed that some test tubes in her study have been broken and more importantly, three of the most important pages of his works have disappeared. Aunt Fanny has found the bottle of camphorated oil in the study fender. Anne knows what George did the night before, but does not give her cousin away.

Their Uncle wants to see George as soon as she comes in. The cousins meet George walking Timmy and manage to warn her what has happened.
12. Who will feed Timmy while George is not allowed to see him?

Answer: Julian

Uncle Quentin believes George when she says she did not take the pages or touch the test tubes. But she is to go to bed for the rest of the day and not to see Timmy for three whole days. George discovers that her father's study faces east, has a stone floor, and wooden panelling. Could the secret way begin at Kirrin Cottage? George suspects Mr Roland has something to do with the stealing of the pages - after all, she did find him in the study.

It also explains why the tutor was so eager to keep George out of the house. Julian sneaks up to George's room. Mr Roland goes out and George persuades Julian to follow him.

He might be giving the pages to somebody. Julian follows the tutor, and sees him meeting the two artists on the common. He sees Mr Roland give one of the artists something.
13. Where are the three panels situated in the study?

Answer: Over the mantelpiece

It is snowing hard. Aunt Fanny says that they'll be snowed in. Mr Roland asks about Kirrin Farm, Aunt Fanny says it will be even worse there. The children sneak to see George and Julian tells her what he saw with Mr Roland and the artists. George tells them what she discovered about her father's study.

They plan to explore it at midnight. They find the Secret way, a stone in the stone opens to reveal a passage. The next day, the snow is deep. Timmy is in the warm kitchen, although George still isn't allowed to see him. Mr Roland is also in bed with a cold.

The children pretend to do lessons but instead go down the secret way. Uncle Quentin is clearing the snow. Timmy escapes from the kitchen and goes down the secret way too.
14. What does Anne look in, while searching Mr Wilton's room?

Answer: Wash jug stand

The children and dog go along the passage. Then Julian climbs up a sort of shaft, to find that the secret way leads into the cupboard, with a false back, in Kirrin Farm. It is in one of the artist's rooms. There is a communicating door between the two rooms.

They lock the doors and then two search Mr Wilton's room while the other two search Mr Thomas's room, trying to find the stolen pages. They do not succeed. Then men's voices are heard, outside.
15. And finally, how do the police arrive at Kirrin Cottage?

Answer: By skis

The children hear the men's voices and they hear that the papers are in the very room they are in now. The children hurry down the secret way as the men begin to break down the door. As George goes down the secret way, she feels something in a pocket of a mackintosh, and puts it in her jumper.

It feels like the pages of her father's work. Timmy howls in the secret passage and the men hear him. They discover the secret passage and follow the children. Anne is tired so George gives Dick the papers and tells them to go ahead, while she frightens off the men with Timmy.

They get to Kirrin Cottage and tell George's parents everything. The pages what George found are the right ones. They lock Mr Roland in his room so he can't go snooping around. And later, when the two artists come into the study from the secret way, they put them in Mr Roland's room too; all ready for when the police arrive. Look our for more Famous Five questions soon!
