Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what season does this story take place?

Answer: Spring

The four children and Timmy are going to stay with George's parents at Kirrin. It is the beginning of the Easter holidays. During the night, an ash tree falls onto Kirrin Cottage. No one is injured but the four children are sent to stay with a friend of Uncle Quentin, Mr Lenoir. Mr Lenoir has a stepson, Sooty, who is in Dick's form at school, and is rather cheeky.

He also has a daughter called Marybelle. They live at Smuggler's Top. Timmy is not allowed to go with the children, as Mr Lenoir does not like dogs, but George takes him along anyway.
2. On what side of the house is the round tower at Smuggler's Top?

Answer: East

Smuggler's Top is on Castaway Hill, surrounded by marshes. A wall surrounds Castaway Hill; there is an old fashioned town on Castaway Hill. The driver of the taxi says you can walk around the walls. Sooty greats the children, he says that he will help George hide Timmy.

His sister, Marybelle, is not like Sooty; she is fair while Sooty is dark. Mr Lenoir is Marybelle's father but Sooty's stepfather.
3. What is the name of the maid who cleans Sooty's room?

Answer: Sarah

Sooty says that his and Marybelle's room is separate from the rest of the house. Sooty has got a buzzer in his bedroom, which tells him when someone is coming to his room.
4. What colour coat does Block wear when the cousins first meet him?

Answer: White

Block works for Sooty's stepfather. He is deaf, but Sooty says he thinks that Block senses what people are saying. Sooty hides Timmy in the cupboard before Block sees him. He says that Timmy can stay in the secret passage, and they'll exercise him every day.
5. What colour eyes does Mr Lenoir have?

Answer: Blue

Mrs Lenoir is small, and very pleasant. Mr Lenoir smiles with his mouth but not with his eyes. When he gets angry, the tip of his nose turns white. The children have meals in the old schoolroom, so they don't disturb Mr Lenoir.
6. In which bedroom is the trap door hiding the pit?

Answer: Marybelle's

The pit leads into the hill and the secret tunnel. Marybelle suggests Timmy is hauled up and down the secret passage by the big laundry basket. There are lots of catacombs and secret tunnels inside the hill. The children use it when they take Timmy for a walk.
7. What is the name of the kitchen maid?

Answer: Harriet

Sooty calls Julian and Dick one night, there is someone signalling in the tower. Mr Lenoir is snoring in bed. Dick thinks it might be Block but he is in bed, asleep. A spiral staircase leads to the tower. The tower faces seawards.
8. Who kicks Anne on the ankle?

Answer: Sooty

Anne asks Sooty what Mr Barling smuggles, while Block is in the room, serving them their meal. Sooty says although Block can not hear, he saw a surprised look on Block's face, when Anne asked the question.
9. What did George put in the secret passage for Timmy?

Answer: Biscuits

Timmy barks in the secret passage while the children are eating lunch in the schoolroom. He is chasing a rat. Block does not seem to hear the barking but Mr Lenoir comes into the schoolroom, which is unusual. He hears Timmy barks and demands to know whom the dog belongs to. The children pretend it is the sound of a seagull. Mr Lenoir does not believe them.
10. Whose room is Uncle Quentin sleeping in?

Answer: Sooty's

There is no time for the children to get Timmy out of the secret passage in Sooty's room. Sooty will be sharing with Julian and Dick. Uncle Quentin is interested in the same thing as Mr Lenoir, in draining the marshes, which surround Castaway.
11. Where in Mr Lenoir's study does George hide?

Answer: Behind the settee

George sneaks into the study. Mr Lenoir's room is the only other room that has a secret passage which leads to where Timmy is hidden. Mr Lenoir comes in the room so she hides. Mr Lenoir settles down for a sleep so George comes out of her hiding place to find the secret passage.

Unfortunately, Mr Lenoir wakes and catches her. George is locked in her bedroom. George is only allowed bread and water.
12. Who sees Mr Barling talking to a man who looks like Block?

Answer: George

George climbs out of her bedroom window with the rope ladder, she plans to get back inside Mr Lenoir's study and find the secret passage. She also walks along the city walls, and she sees into Mr Barling's house. He is talking to someone who looks very much like Block. Sooty has some food for George, and comments that Block has gone to bed.

He even peeps into his bedroom and sees his body in the bed.
13. What does George throw at Block?

Answer: Water

Sooty is going to help George get into the secret passage in the study. Uncle Quentin has arrived at Smuggler's Top; he is annoyed at George's behaviour. The study door is locked, so Sooty goes into his old room, where Uncle Quentin is sleeping, to get Timmy. Sooty is amazed to find Mr Barling in the room, and utters an exclamation of astonishment before being knocked out. George is in the next room, and hears Sooty's cry of astonishment, and goes into the room.

There is no sign of either Sooty, Uncle Quentin or Mr Barling. George tells Julian and Dick. Mr Lenoir threatens to tell the police when Julian tells him of the mysterious disappearances. Julian is surprised that Mr Lenoir wants to involve the police; he thinks he has too many secrets.

The children realise that Mr Lenoir has nothing to do with smuggling, in fact Mr Lenoir suspects Mr Barling. Julian wanted to explore Mr Barling's house, which also has many secret passages, in case Uncle Quentin and Sooty are hidden there. A local gardener tells them that Mr Barling and his servants have gone away. George finds a screw in Uncle Quentin's bedroom - it has come out of the large window seat, which has always been screwed down.

She gets a screwdriver and unscrews the window seat. There is a secret passage inside the window seat.
14. Who goes with Julian to Mr Barling's home?

Answer: Dick

Meanwhile, what about Sooty and Uncle Quentin? We discover that Block isn't as deaf as he seems, he has been giving information to Mr Barling, from Mr Lenoir's studies. Mr Barling has taken Sooty and a half drugged Uncle Quentin into the secret passages, through the window seat. Mr Barling says he is a smuggler; he does not want the marshes drained, as it would stop his smuggling trade. Mr Lenoir was going to buy Uncle Quentin's plans but Mr Barling wants Uncle Quentin to sign the plans over to him. Timmy rescues Sooty and Uncle Quentin from Mr Barling and Block.

He leads them out into the open, near the marshes. He then hears George's voice and goes back into the secret passages.
15. Who says; "It's all your fault, you horrid man"?

Answer: Anne

George goes into the secret passage with her three cousins. They are caught by Mr Barling and Block. Mr Barling says he will hold everyone prisoner, when he hears that Mr Lenoir has been in touch with the police. Timmy comes and scares off the men. Timmy leads the children to Sooty and Uncle Quentin before getting trapped in the marshes.Timmy escapes and the lorry takes everyone back to Smuggler's Top. Mr Lenoir discovers that he likes Timmy, when he is introduced to him, and allows him to stay. Timmy also helps the police find Block and Mr Barling who are still wandering through the maze of secret passages.
