Aunt Fanny hasn't been feeling well lately. Mrs Stick is the new cook at Kirrin Cottage and she isn't very nice. Mrs Stick's son, Edgar is also at Kirrin Cottage. He is slightly older than the cousins, and constantly torments George. Mrs Stick also has a pet dog.

His name is Tinker but the children call him Stinker, as he smells. Timmy keeps fighting with Stinker so Mrs Stick has to keep him in the kitchen.

The next day, George and her cousins go for a picnic. George says that Kirrin Island belongs to her cousins as well - she plans to divide it into four. The boat has got a new coat of paint, so the children can't take their picnic to the island, only on the beach. George is annoyed to see a spire of smoke on Kirrin Island and says somebody must be on it.

Answer: In the sitting room

He laughs when George calls for her parents and she hits him. He finally tells them that Aunt Fanny has been taken ill so has gone into hospital, with Uncle Quentin. There is a note from Uncle Quentin for George. Uncle Quentin says that he will be staying with Aunt Fanny until she is well on the road to recovery. Mrs Stick is in charge of the children.

Answer: Julian

Mrs Stick does not give the children supper so Julian goes to the larder for food, in the middle of the night. He is surprised to find a man sleeping in the kitchen. This is Mr Stick, Mrs Stick's husband and Edgar's father. He is a sailor, who is home, on leave. Julian takes a meat pie and also takes jam tarts to share with the others. Mr Stick says Uncle Quentin knows that he will be staying at Kirrin Cottage.

He is just as unpleasant as his wife and son. Uncle Quentin rings the next day. He says that he will be away for a number of days. If Julian, Dick and Anne dislike the Sticks so much, they'd better go back home.

But George is to stay at Kirrin Cottage.

Mrs Stick refuses to make a picnic up for them, when Julian asks. She is annoyed about Julian taking the meat pie and jam tarts, which had been meant for the Sticks. George tries to persuade her cousins to go back home, she has a plan of her own, but they refuse.

Julian wakes up in the middle of night, a noise disturbs him. He goes into Anne and George's bedroom to find that George is not there. He catches up with her on the beach, she has lots of things with her. She is planning to stay on Kirrin Island until her parents return.

This is why she was encouraging her cousins to go back home, as there would be no point of them staying at Kirrin Cottage alone. Julian says that they will all stay on Kirrin Island together, the next day. He thinks the idea is very good.

But George must come back to the cottage to tell the others and get more supplies. George agrees.

Answer: Dick

They take supplies from the store cupboard of Aunt Fanny's, as they can replace them. They take lots of other things too. They take the supplies down to the boat in wheelbarrows. They leave Dick, with the supplies and return to the cottage. They purposely make a lot of noise leaving the cottage and leave a train timetable open, hoping that the Sticks think they are going back to Julian's parents. Alf, the fisher boy, will signal to George when her parents are home.

Answer: Anne

The children arrive on Kirrin Island and have a sleep before exploring the island. The place where they have planned to sleep and store things, in the ruined castle, is too dangerous. To their surprise they find enormous stones block the entrance to the dungeons.

They also see that somebody has built a wood fire on the island. George is annoyed that people have been there without her permission. The children explore the old wreck, which is even more battered than the year before. Anne finds a trunk on the wreck, it is securely locked and is quite dry, so hasn't been there for long. Julian thinks it has to do with smugglers.

The children find a fine cave to sleep in and to store things in.

Answer: Food

Julian and George are awakened in the night, by Timmy's growling. Someone is on the wreck; Julian sees a light on it. The next day, they explore the wreck. They find lots of things, stored with the trunk. It looks as if the smugglers are also going to camp on the island. They hide their boat behind a rock and decide to keep look out at night too. Then, Timmy starts growling again.

Answer: Mrs Stick

The children hide in their cave but Julian keeps watch. Unfortunately, Timmy goes off by himself when he smells something. Julian sees the three Sticks coming out of the dungeons when Timmy attacks Stinker. Luckily Timmy goes back to George. The Sticks think Timmy was a stray.

Answer: Clara

Julian says that the Sticks aren't looking for them; he thinks they are connected in someway with the smugglers and they are hiding the goods in the dungeons.

Answer: Cow

The children decide to go into the dungeons, to scare the Sticks with the echoes. Anne stays above ground with Timmy. Julian makes bleating noises while George pretends to be a horse and a pig. Julian sees a boat signalling at sea.

Answer: Edgar

The children drag the trunk away before the Sticks can explore the island, as they think somebody is on it. Mr Stick has a gun with him. Edgar, unfortunately, falls through the hole, into the children's cave. He says he knows nothing about smuggling. The children decide to keep him a prisoner and gives Timmy permission to bite Edgar if he shouts for help.

They open the trunk. There are children's clothes, dolls and a teddy bear inside it.

Answer: The Roamer

The Roamer is obviously the name of a ship. While Julian and George are on watch, that night, they see the Sticks go to the wreck to meet a boat. They see Mr Stick carrying a bundle into the dungeons. They hear a girl's scream, but Anne is fast asleep.

They realise that the Sticks aren't smugglers, but kidnappers. They must have kidnapped a rich little girl and holding her to ransom. They plan to rescue her the next day.

Answer: Jennifer

Dick, George, Julian and Edgar go into the dungeons and rescue the little girl. She was being kept in the same room as where they found the ingots of gold the summer before. They leave Edgar in her place, and lock him in there. The little girl has red hair and her name is Jennifer (or Jenny) Mary Armstrong.

They go to have breakfast in the cave. The children row to shore, to the police station with Jenny. Uncle Quentin is there too, he returned to Kirrin Cottage when nobody answered the telephone in the mornings, and found the house ransacked. Julian tells the story and Jenny is reunited with her parents.

The Sticks are caught. Aunt Fanny will be home in a week's time so the cousins stay on the island, and Jenny gets permission to stay on the island too! Look out for more Famous Five quizzes soon!
