Matt Amsterdam is a 12 year old who is bullied by his siblings. Even his dog hates him for some unknown reason. He wants to sleep in the guest room, but his mom refuses to let him. Biggie is a dachshund, and he doesn't like Matt. He always wags his and licks people's hands, even with total strangers, according to Matt. But with Matt, Biggie growls and snaps. This gives Matt's siblings an advantage, just to torment him.

Her nighttime job is typing at a law firm. Because of her jobs, she isn't around much, much to Matt's irritation. She doesn't let Matt sleep in the guest room because she wants to keep it nice for guests. According to Matt, their only guests are his grandparents, who annually visit for Christmas, which is only once a year, but Mrs. Amsterdam still refuses to let Matt have the guest room.

Pam enjoys teaming up with Matt's brother to annoy Matt. Matt gets mad at this, which is why he wants the guest room. She asks her mom about putting her winter clothes in the guest room closet, because her bedroom closet is apparently packed. Her mom says she'll think about, much to Matt's dismay.

Like Pam, Greg likes to pick on Matt. He even writes his homework assignment about how boring and lame Matt's life apparently is, even speaking into a tape recorder about the whole thing. When its his turn to make dinner, he claims that he can't because of so much homework.

At Pam's suggestion, Mrs. Amsterdam makes Matt cook dinner, despite his protest that it isn't his turn. Greg even claims that Matt is a terrible cook, as Matt is making tuna casserole; Greg insists that Matt caused the noodles on the bottom to burn, making Matt yell at him.

Matt looks in the mirror to realize it after he sees his feet are bigger and he thinks the bathroom doorknob is in the wrong place. He thinks it's all a dream at first, he even closes his eyes for a few seconds, without success. His siblings and mom apparently act as if it is normal. Matt gulps when his mom drops him off at the high school, after dropping off Pam and Greg, who are 11 and 12, at the middle school in the alternate universe.

Matt sees it on the workbook of the student he sits next to. He explains that he is bad at math, even 7th grade math. The teacher spots Matt and asks him if he is supposed to be in her class. Matt freaks out saying he isn't. The teacher looks at the schedule and informs Matt that he isn't supposed to be math class until 2:30, unless he needs to switch. Matt says that its all okay, saying that he just mixed up.

After spotting Matt, the teacher claims that this is the second time Matt has arrived late for class. The teacher makes him read first since Matt came to class last. Matt doesn't have his copy of the book "Anna Karenina", so he borrows one from the girl sitting next to him. Matt can't read to rest of the sentence after having trouble with a word.

He yawns, so the teacher assumes he is bored and asks Matt a question about the subject, causing everyone to look at Matt. Matt then says he has to go to the bathroom, making everyone laugh, except the teacher.

He lets Matt go, and tells him to stop by the principal's office on the way back.

Matt sees a frosted glass window on the door which says "Mrs. McNabb, Principal." Matt thinks she'll yell at him, so he turns around to head back to English before spotting a bully who claims that Matt beat him up the other day. Matt immediately knows the principal's office isn't scary because he knows the bully won't beat him up in the principal's office. Mrs. McNabb proves to be a nice principal, since she offers Matt a seat. Matt says he can't do high school work, so Mrs. McNabb grabs his folder and shows him his grades from 7th grade all the way to the first half of 11th grade.

Matt hopes he doesn't get picked, but there isn't any way out. All Matt manages to do is mess up because he isn't used to his eleventh grade body. He gets hit in the head by the volleyball, he trips onto a fellow student and hurt his elbow, resulting in the guy being sent to the nurse.

Then Matt tries to redeem himself when it's his turn to serve. This backfires when he hits the volleyball too hard trying to score a point. The volleyball hits Lisa's head. She tearfully asks Matt why he had to hit it so hard.

The gym teacher sends Lisa to the nurse as well after indicating that she will have a nasty bruise where the volleyball hit her.
