Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What word makes this sentence correct? You can talk about that until the _____ come home, it won't do you any good.

Answer: cows

This idiom may have originated in Scotland. It means taking a long time to do something, as cows prefer to amble along their path back to the barn and not be rushed.
2. She is such a _____! Maybe she's not someone you like and tries to do whatever you do. What is the missing word?

Answer: copycat

The term copycat (or copy cat or copy-cat) appears to have been invented in the U.S. state of Maine over 100 years ago, and maybe even long before that. Cats aren't known to imitate people but they have often been disliked throughout history and so calling someone a copycat is to insult them for doing the same as other people.
3. What animal does this metaphor concern? That's like having an 800 pound ___ in the room.

Answer: gorilla

To ignore the large gorilla, or elephant, or dead moose, in the room is to not want to deal with an unpleasant topic that everyone knows is there.
4. He was drawn to it like a _____ to a flame. Who got burned?

Answer: moth

If you turn on an outside light on a summer evening you will see moths circling it. It means to be tempted by something that may not be good for you. It can be traced back to at least 1596, when in "The Merchant of Venice", William Shakespeare wrote "Thus has the candle singed the moth."
5. What phrase am I thinking of now? Ha, I got the _____ share of that one!

Answer: lion's

It is hard to tell from the picture if that lion is happy or angry; let's not stick around to find out! But someone who has the lion's share of anything has gotten most of it.
6. There's a fairly new saying, originating on a television show that used a weird gimmick to try to get more viewers. Do you know what it means to "jump the _____"?

Answer: shark

Hunker down kids because this will take a minute to explain. On the TV show "Happy Days" the motorcycle-riding, leather jacket-wearing character Fonzie is talked into water skiing and jumping over a shark. Since this was a show about 1950s nostalgia, the scene didn't seem to fit and people thought the writers must have run out of ideas. "Jumping the shark" has come to indicate a point when a show or product has started to decline.

The picture is of a Great White Shark which can grow to over 16 feet/4 meters; they're pretty grumpy. The only thing that seems to make them happy is eating something, so let's not try to jump over one.
7. Okay, you kids, stop _____ing around in the house! Uh oh, what animal were you guys imitating in the living room?

Answer: horse

If you let horses out of the barn on a nice Spring day they may want to just run around the field and enjoy themselves. If your parents worry about you horsing around inside, they may be worried that you will do something like knocking the picture of great aunt Ethel off the end table!
8. Many people say that a _____ is man's best friend. What animal is it?

Answer: dog

Dogs have not always been pets. They were first considered as competitors for food. When some were partly domesticated, they were kept for hunting. It was not until the 18th century that they were brought into the house as pets. The phrase "A dog is man's best friend" can be traced to a court case in Warrensburg, Missouri, U.S.A. in 1870, when lawyer George Vest said, among other things about dogs: "When all other friends desert, he remains.

When riches take wings and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens."
9. There is an expression: "Birds of a feather _____". What do they do?

Answer: flock together

The phrase can be found in a 1545 writing by William Turner: "Birds of one kind and color flock and fly always together." From that we mean that people who like the same things, or act alike, pal around together.

The American goldfinches in this picture, like many birds, prefer to band together. When they are at a bird feeder and other birds approach, the finches will try to chase the others away.
10. If you wanted to get somewhere quickly, you would make a ___line for it. What kind of line is that?

Answer: bee

When a bee finds a good source of pollen it goes back to the hive and does a little dance to let the other bees know where it is (kind of like charades, I guess). Then the others go straight to it and back. So when we want to go directly to something we say we're making a beeline for it.
