Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Let's start right here on planet earth. Did you know that most of the surface of the Earth is covered with water? But there are also many islands and a number of continents. A continent is a huge land mass. How many continents are there on our lovely planet?

Answer: Seven

The seven traditional continents are: Asia, Africa, North America, South America, Europe, Australia, and Antarctica.
2. Now let's go out into space. Space is cold. But our planet is warmed by a star we call "Sol" or "The Sun". The Sun is 93 million miles away! About how long does it take for heat and light to reach the Earth from the Sun?

Answer: Eight minutes

If the Sun were any closer we'd all burn up. If it were any further away we'd all freeze. Good thing it's exactly as far away from us as it is. It takes exactly one year for the earth to circle the sun. That's what a year is!
3. Let's go from outer space to the inside of your body. Which of the following choices gives the names of two types of blood cells?

Answer: Red and white

Most of your blood cells are red. The red cells carry oxygen to the other parts of your body through your arteries. The less common white cells fight germs in your body. The white cells grab the germs and cover them up and kill them! Wow! A fight in your very own body. Isn't learning new stuff fun?!
4. While we're inside the human body let's see what happens when we eat. The food we eat goes into our stomach and is digested. That means your body turns it into energy for you to live! One of the most important foodstuffs we eat is bread. What is bread mostly made out of?

Answer: Grain, such as wheat

Farmers grow wheat, barley, rice, oats, and other grains. The kernels of grain are separated from the stem, and crushed into flour. The flour is mixed with water and yeast and baked. That's where bread comes from!
5. Now that we've had some food I feel like going for a little walk. Or we could fly! Thanks to Orville and Wilbur Wright, the Wright Brothers, we can fly in an airplane and go to far away places. They invented the airplane. What did these brothers do for a living?

Answer: They had a bicycle repair shop

You can see the Wright Brothers' airplane in a museum. It's in the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC.
6. Flying in a plane is fun! We can go to many interesting places by plane or by boat or by car or bus or we can walk. Do you like to travel? Some people study the way different countries look. They know the names of the cities and the type of land there. Are there mountains where you live? Or beaches or forests? Do you know what the study of different places is called?

Answer: Geography

You can read interesting books about places in the world or you can go there and write your own books about it. Are you interested in different places? Then you are interested in geography. "Geo" means "the earth". By the way, "Zoology" means the study of animals, "Ecology" means the study of the environment, and "Arithmetic" means learning about math and about numbers.

It's fun to study and learn new things!
7. I love balloons. Some balloons float in the air. If you let go of the string it floats up! What's in the balloon to make it float up like that?

Answer: Helium

The air that we breathe is made up of different types of gases. Oxygen is one of them. It's the one we need to breathe to be able to live. Helium is another gas that is lighter than most other gases. Since it's lighter than air a balloon that's filled with helium will float.

The only other gas that's lighter than air is hydrogen. You could fill a balloon with hydrogen and it would float too. The reason we don't fill balloons with hydrogen is because hydrogen will explode if fire touches it. The study of different gases and other materials that things are made out of is called "Chemistry". Studying chemistry is fun!
8. I like to learn new words. If you know a lot of words then you have a good vocabulary. Words represent ideas, so if you know a new word you know a new idea. That makes you smart. What word would you use to describe an animal which only eats other animals?

Answer: Carnivorous

Some of my favorite animals are carnivorous. Sharks, lions, tigers, snakes, eagles, and crocodiles are all carnivorous. A dog is carnivorous too! Next time you're talking with your Mom or Dad about an animal, ask them if it's "carnivorous". I bet they'll be surprised!
9. Learning about nature is fun. It's a part of science. But its also fun to learn about the great works of humans, such as interesting books or pretty pictures. That's the study of art. Literature is the study of books. Do you like to read? One of my favorite books is about a young person just like you, who visits a strange land. She meets many funny characters on the way to a place called "Emerald City" but an evil witch tries to stop her. Can she and her friends outsmart the witch? Do you know what the name of this book is?

Answer: The Wonderful Wizard of Oz

"The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" is a really great book written by a man named L. Frank Baum. It's very exciting to read books. Reading is a great way to learn stuff.
10. Did you ever see a drawing that you thought was very beautiful? People who draw pretty pictures are called "artists". You can be an artist too! Keep drawing and you'll get better and better at it. It's hard at first. There is a famous museum in Paris. Paris is the capital city of France. The museum is called the "Louvre" and there is a painting there of a girl and it's called the "Mona Lisa". It's a very beautiful painting because the girl in the painting looks so natural, so relaxed, and peaceful. Do you know who painted this marvelous portrait?

Answer: Leonardo da Vinci

Leonardo lived 500 years ago in Italy. He also wrote about science. If you have an interesting idea you can draw a picture about it, write a poem or story about it, or make up a song about it. Say! Learning about science, and art, sure can be fun. It's much better than wasting your time watching TV, right? I love to study, to visit museums, to go places, and to do things. Don't you?
