quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which "Harry Potter" cover features a glorious red bird soaring between snake covered pillars.

Answer: "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets"

The beautiful red bird is Fawkes, Dumbledore's phoenix, who is helping Harry as he ventures into the Chamber of Secrets to save Ginny from the clutches of Tom Riddle.
2. Harry Potter holds what appears to be a glowing egg on the front cover of this volume. He is also confronting the thorny trunk of something in the foreground while various characters peer over his shoulders.

Answer: "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire"

Although he wasn't planning to participate in the interscholastic TriWizards competition, Harry is forced to participate in the dangerous trials of wizarding brains and brawn. The thorny trunk turns out to be the tail of a fearsome dragon, which Harry confronts during one of his competitive trials.

The characters peering over his shoulders are his three wizarding competitors (Viktor Krum from Durmstrang, Fleur Delacour from Beauxbatons, and Cedric Diggory from Hogwarts).
3. In reading this "Harry Potter" book, we learn that the creature flying across the cover is a hippogriff named Buckbeak.

Answer: "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban"

Draco Malfoy, not liking anything that Harry likes, has extended his disdain to Hagrid's creatures. Draco gets on Buckbeak's bad side, and Draco uses the slight injury he receives to condemn the hippogriff to death. Harry saves Buckbeak in the process of saving the title "Prisoner of Azkaban."
4. Harry looks curiously into a glowing cauldron sitting on a pillar while an old wizard waves his hand over the sickly green light emanating from the cauldron. Which "Harry Potter" cover am I describing?

Answer: "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince"

The wizard is Dumbledore, of course, and the cauldron is presumably either the Pensieve with which they are exploring the memories of various people in search of clues about Lord Voldemort... or it is the pillar holding a liquid that Dumbledore drinks in order to get the horcrux locket holding a portion of Voldemort's soul.
5. On the back cover of this "Harry Potter" novel, we see "Mad-eye" Moody, easily identified by the sinister appearance of one eye (a magical construct) being much larger than the other, as he creeps through a darkened passageway.

Answer: "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix"

"Mad-eye" Moody, an Auror, lost his eye in a fight against the forces of evil. He now has a magical eye that allows him to see wherever he sends the eye, even around corners and behind his head. He was a major character in the previous novel, "Goblet of Fire," and is a member of The Order of the Phoenix, which is why he appears on the back cover here.
6. Of the first six "Harry Potter" books, this is the only one on which Hermione Granger appears with Harry on the front cover. She is riding behind Harry, looking as if she is enjoying the ride.

Answer: "Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban"

Hermione Granger, along with Ron Weasley, is one of Harry's best friends. In this novel, she helps Harry rescue Sirius Black and the hippogriff by using a Time Turner. She had been manipulating time in order to double up on her class load.
7. On this "Harry Potter" cover, the candles are almost blown out by the wind of numerous doors opening or closing in the background.

Answer: "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix"

Although deaths have happened before in the series, the one that happens in this book comes closest to Harry's heart, shattering his dreams of getting away from the Dursleys.
8. Harry Potter flies a broomstick under an arch, as he attempts to catch a small, golden winged ball.

Answer: "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone"

The book that started it all! Harry discovers that he is a wizard, that he can attend the magical Hogwarts school... and when he is in the middle of trying to find his footing in an unfamiliar world, he discovers that he has the valuable talent of being able to catch the Golden Snitch. Harry Potter, despite being a first-year student, is given special permission to join the Gryffindor Quidditch team.
9. Ron, Hermione and Ginny stare in horror up at a starry constellation forming a skull and snake on the back cover of this "Harry Potter" novel.

Answer: "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince"

The stars form a "Dark Mark" which the "Death Eaters" cast into the sky to herald their kills. In this novel, the Dark Mark appears over the astronomy tower of Hogwarts foreshadowing the stunning death of a major character associated with the school.
10. Again, of the first six books in the "Harry Potter" series, it is the only one in which Harry has a sword buckled at his waist. A serpent slithers on the floor below his feet.

Answer: "Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets"

Harry is holding on to Fawkes' tail as they fly over the serpent on the floor. The sword, which the Sorting Hat gave to Harry, is instrumental in defeating Tom Riddle.
