Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The Earl is tasting a new batch of ale

Answer: Brewery

The alewife at Warwick Castle estimates that each person on the estate drinks about a gallon of ale a day! It is an important beverage for us; drinking the water is always an uncertain proposition, as it usually doesn't taste very good, and has made some of us really ill from time to time. Ale doesn't stay fresh very long, so the alewife is always busy brewing this very important part of our diet.
2. The Earl is praying with Father Christopher

Answer: Chapel

The chapel is a part of the castle that all people on the estate use - a lot! The Church expects us all to pray four times a day - when we wake, at noon, in the evening, and before bed - and sometimes it takes a while! In addition to the chapel, my Lord and Lady have an oratory, which is for their private use.

While some nobles build their chapel near the gatehouse, so that enemies would have to fire upon it when making an attack (God wouldn't like that!), ours is just off the Great Hall.
3. The Earl is training his new falcon

Answer: Mews

Like many of the noblemen, my Lord is mad about falconry and hunting. While our Lord Falconer Ralf is the one who mostly trains the birds, the Earl takes as active a role as time permits. In fact, he even enjoys having his favorite falcon perched on his wrist as he walks about the manor.

The falcons are important to our life because they assist in the procurement of food; depending on the size of the bird, it can be taught to capture rabbits or larger game birds. A well-trained falcon can be worth its weight in gold - literally!
4. The Earl is overseeing entry fortification repairs - watch out for the moat!

Answer: Drawbridge

It is very important to keep the drawbridge in good working order, as it protects one of the most vulnerable parts of the entire castle complex. At Warwick Castle we have two drawbridges that allow entry into the gatehouse. They are made of wood; one of the edges is attached to a hinge that also attaches to the gatehouse entry.

When the bridge is raised, it becomes flush with the wall, so it acts as a barrier to entry. As an added precaution, there is also a portcullis in the gatehouse that serves as another obstacle after one has crossed the drawbridge.
5. The Earl is watching the knights joust

Answer: Lists

It is extremely important for the knights to practice their fighting skills, and almost every day they can be seen in the lists practicing their jousting, swordplay, or some other expertise. From time to time, the Earl invites his allies to come to Warwick Castle to see a tournament, where knights can show off their skills and win prizes! When it is time for a tournament, seating is set up around the lists, and guests watch the competitions and cheer on their favorites. We pages dream about "being in the lists", which means that someday we will be able to participate in a tournament too!
6. The Earl is with my Lady in the courtyard

Answer: Inner Bailey

The inner bailey is open ground that is situated in the center of the castle complex; many buildings that are important to castle life, such as the bakery and creamery are located there. In addition, there is a cistern that provides the water supply for the castle.

It is much safer for my Lord and Lady to enjoy fresh air and a walk in this area, than to go outside the castle gates. My Lady tends a very beautiful flower garden there and it is quite a pleasant place to visit.
7. The Earl is making an accounting of the meat supply

Answer: Larder

This accounting is very important when winter is coming! At Warwick Castle the larder connects to the kitchen by a hallway that goes underground. It has been specially constructed so that it is very cool, and kept in good repair in order to avoid vermin.

There is a special stone called a thrawl, that keeps the meat and fish especially cool. The larderer has a very important job, but this is not the only food storage area in the castle. There are also rooms where meat is dried and stored in brine; of course, we also have storage areas for fruits, vegetables, and other edibles.
8. The Earl is grooming his favorite destrier

Answer: Stables

The knight's destrier is a very important weapon in his arsenal, and the horses are trained almost from birth to use in war, as well as jousting contests. Honestly, most knights keep coursers and rounceys; as the finest warhorse, the destrier is very expensive. Knights who can afford the expense use the destrier for jousting, and the courser for other types of warfare.
9. The Earl is taking his turn at the night watch

Answer: Battlements

I love to run errands to the battlements, as they are high at the top of the castle, and one can see for miles and miles! The top of the battlement has crenelations, which means that there is rampart with gaps; this is a very important part of the defense of our castle.

The gaps in the crenelations provide access for our archers to fire at enemies who might try to gain entry. Some of our battlements also protrude from the castle wall, allowing for the dropping of stones or pouring of hot oil on would-be attackers.
10. The Earl is enjoying the evening meal

Answer: Great Hall

The Great Hall is one of the largest and busiest rooms at Warwick Castle. Guests are received in this room, and it is where all of us eat together. At night it becomes a sleeping room for many of us who live in the castle. There is a warm fireplace that is very inviting during winter months, and it is beautifully decorated with the Earl's coat of arms. I have been warned to speak quietly in this room; the Earls bedchamber is above the Great Hall, and somehow he can hear conversations - if he has any spare time!
