Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What horse was developed in the American West as a cow horse, and is now a popular horse?

Answer: Quarter Horse

All of the horses given in the answer choices are popular today.

The Appaloosa, Quarter Horse, and Morgan were all developed in America.

The Appaloosa and the Quarter Horse both were developed in the American West.

But only the Quarter Horse was developed as a cow horse. They are used today in a variety of disciplines, such as Western Pleasure, Jumping, and Barrel Racing.
2. American super-pony, Theodore O'Connor, had what three breeds in his lineage?

Answer: Thoroughbred, Arabian, Shetland

Theodore "Teddy" O'Connor, was ridden by Karen O'Connor, 2008 Olympian, was 3/4 Thoroughbred, 1/8 Arabian, and 1/8 Shetland. Teddy received third in the Rolex Kentucky 3-Day Event in 2008. He had to be euthanized May 28, 2008 after a freak accident at Karen O'Conner's barn.
3. The Pony of Americas was developed by crossing an Appaloosa stallion with a Shetland Pony mare.

Answer: False

The Pony of Americas was developed in 1954, when a Shetland pony breeder bought an Appaloosa/Arabian mare that had been bred to a Shetland stallion. The foal was a white colt with black marks dotting his body. One mark looked like a hand, so he was named 'Black Hand.'
4. In what state(s) did the tribes who developed the Appaloosa horse live?

Answer: Washington, Oregon

The Nez Perce's range stretched from the eastern parts of Washington and Oregon. Their first horses were obtained from the Shoshone people around 1730.
5. What is the only breed of draft horse that originated in the United States?

Answer: American Cream Draft

In 1911, a cream-colored mare named 'Old Granny' was purchased. She was the foundation mare for the breed, since most of her foals carried her coat coloring. Only about 300 of this breed exist today, with the American Livestock Breeds Conservancy listing them as 'critical.'
6. Which exotic horse breed is known for its distinctive curved eartips?

Answer: Marwari

Mawaris were first bred in India as royal war horses. They stand 14-17 hands high, and come in all colors, including pinto and cremello.
7. There are different types of Quarter Horses.

Answer: True

Some of the types of the Quarter Horse include: the "racing" type, the "stock" type and the "halter" type.
8. The Lusitano and the Andalusian have the same roots.

Answer: True

These two breeds both trace their roots to the Iberian Penisula around Spain and Portugal. They have been used in dressage for hundreds of years. Just recently, they have been replaced by Thoroughbreds and Warmbloods, but are now making a comeback.
9. What color is illegal for Arabian horses?

Answer: Palomino

Unless crossbred, Arabian lines do not contain the cream gene to make a palomino. They also cannot come in dun, or pinto. However, small amounts of sabino coloring is allowed.
10. What breed of horse, though very versatile, is known for the high-stepping gait, the rack?

Answer: American Saddlebred

The American Saddlebred is actually not completely gaited. The majority of the horses are not born with the gait, which means they aren't only in Saddleseat classes. Saddlebreds are in Jumping, Cross-Country, Dressage, and even Western events!
