Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. You have a pet cat. Which of the following does Kitty need every day?

Answer: All of these

It is important that Kitty has exercise every day, for the same reasons that we need it: to stop Kitty from getting overweight, and to help keep her heart in good condition. Let your cat into the garden. Don't worry, she'll come home when she's hungry. Cats need clean drinking water every day. How would you feel if you had to drink old, warm water that had dust collecting on the top? Do not overfeed Kitty, or she may get fat, which is dangerous. Cat food tins usually say how much to give your cat, but if you notice that she is getting fat, and she does have exercise, you maybe overfeeding her. Most cats need 2-3 small meals a day.
2. Which of these yummy foods should you never feed to a rabbit?

Answer: Lettuce

Lettuce should never be fed to Bunny, as even a little bit can cause a tummy upset and diarrhoea. There are many other fruit and vegetables you can give your long eared friend instead. Try carrots, spring greens, kale and apples. Bunny may also like some banana as a treat, or perhaps half a ripe strawberry. Yum!
3. Your pet rats are starting to smell, and time for a cage clean. Which of the following products is ok to use in Rattie's cage?

Answer: Paper-based bedding

Paper-based bedding (which you can buy from a pet store; don't just tear up strips of paper yourself, as these can wrap around your rat's leg and cut off circulation) is good to use in a rat's cage; it is soft and warm for them. Hay is too rough for a rat's tiny paws, so it should only be used for Bunny and guinea pigs. Cedar wood shavings are toxic for small animals, and should never be used in Rattie's, Bunny's or any other small animal's home. Only use a special disinfectant designed for animal cages on Rattie's cage.
4. Your pet (of any kind) is not himself. He is not eating, doesn't want to play, won't have a drink, and is asleep all the time. What should you do?

Answer: Show an adult and ask them to take your pet to the vet

If your pet is behaving differently, it could be ill. Show an adult immediately, and ask them to ring the vets. The vet will try to make your pet better again. Never poke your pet. Remember when you are ill. You want to be left alone, don't you? So does your pet. Giving a pet medicine from your house could kill them. NEVER ever do this, always speak to a vet first. Don't ignore your pet, as it may need urgent vet attention.
5. You have decided to get a pet gerbil. Which of the following houses will be the most fun for him to live in?

Answer: Aquarium tank filled with sawdust and toilet rolls

Unlike hamsters, who are perfectly happy in any of these homes, gerbils love to dig tunnels and bury themselves deep into sawdust or wood shavings. They also love to run through empty toilet roll tubes, so ask your mum to save them for you. Remember to clean out your gerbils often, and feed them a good diet. Gerbils like company, and if you buy two from the same litter, they will probably be very good friends.
6. You have a dog. When Doggie has been a good boy, which of the following treats should you give him?

Answer: Dog biscuit

Never give chocolate to a dog. The ingredients in chocolate are completely safe for us, but they are poisonous to Doggie, and can give him diarrhoea, or too much can sometimes kill a dog! Most pet shops make dog chocolate, which is safe to give to Doggie. Don't feed him too much though, or you'll make Doggie fat! Dogs love bones, but don't give Doggie a chicken bone, as the bones are too soft, and your dog may choke on them. If you want to give your dog a bone, give him one from the pet shop. Dogs love sausage, but they are too fatty for Doggie, and as well as making him fat, they could make him sick.
7. You are stroking your cat, and notice that she is swishing her tail very fast, back and forth. In most cases this means that Kitty wants you to:

Answer: Stop stroking her, she's had enough for now

Unlike Doggie, who will wag his tail when he's happy, Kitty will wag her tail when she is fed up, annoyed or angry. If your cat starts doing this during playtime, it may be best to stop and give Kitty a rest for a while. Sometimes a slow swishing of his tail means he's happy, but not when his tail is swishing quickly.
8. You really, really want to get a pet, but you don't know how to look after one properly. Should you go ahead and buy one?

Answer: Not until you have learned how to look after one properly before you buy it.

You should never, ever, get a pet you don't know how to look after. Before getting any pet, you must know what the pet needs to live in, what it likes to eat, how often it needs to be fed, whether it likes to be by itself, or live with other pets. You also need to make sure an adult is with you when you buy your pet. Remember, a pet is a living animal, and if you have a pet, then it is your responsibility to make sure it is happy and healthy.
9. You have a Syrian hamster, and would like to put another hamster in his cage. Should you give Hammy a friend?

Answer: No. Hamsters like to live by themselves

Never house 2 Syrian hamsters together. Baby hamsters can live together, but as soon as they are grown up, hamsters like to live by themselves. Same- sex (2 males, or 2 females) pairs will fight, and could result in some nasty injuries and a trip to the vet for Hammy.

A male and female pair will also fight, and you will also be left with lots of baby hammies! A few hamster breeds can live together, but these are rare. Always ask your petshop before putting hamsters together.
10. Finally, as a good pet owner, you are responsible for:

Answer: All of these

A pet relies on you for everything, from medical care when she is ill, to clean water for her to drink every day. If you are not prepared to do this for your pet, then it is best that you don't have one. Remember, if you have a pet, you have to look after her properly throughout her life, not just until the novelty of having her wears off. I hope you enjoyed my quiz, thank you for playing :-)
