Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Carlos is helping his father collect materials to build a wall. His father needs four 55-gallon barrels of water to mix with the cement and asks Carlos to fill them. How much water will Carlos need to fill the four 55-gallon barrels?

Answer: 220 gallons

Four barrels multiplied by 55 gallons in each barrel equals 220 gallons.
2. Lily collected 51 eggs from her chickens this morning. How many eggs will she have left over after she puts the eggs in boxes of one dozen each?

Answer: 3 eggs

A box of a dozen holds 12 eggs. 51 eggs divided by 12 is 4 with a remainder of 3. So, Lily could fill 4 boxes holding a dozen eggs each, leaving her with 3 "loose" eggs.
3. Eric went shopping with his mother to purchase presents and decorations for his grandparents' anniversary party. Eric had $100.00 to spend. He would like to buy: picture frame for $40.00; 2 photos of his sister and himself for $6.50 each; wrapping paper for $3.50; ribbon for $2.25; a paper wedding bell for $8.50; a dozen roses for $30.00. How much money did he have left after he paid for all of his purchases?

Answer: $2.75

Did you remember to multiply the cost of the photo prints by 2? Eric's purchases came to $97.25. Subtracting that total from $100 leaves Eric with $2.75.
4. Madeleine and her family have driven to the lake for their vacation. The lake is 240km from their house; and it took 3 hours to drive there. What was their average speed on their drive?

Answer: 80 km/hr

To figure out average speed, divide the distance traveled by the time of the trip to determine distance per time. Here, 240 km traveled divided by 3 hours travel time gives 80 km/hr.
5. The sales tax in Joe's town is 7.5%. How much will he have to pay for for a $34.00 baseball glove, including sales tax?

Answer: $36.55

To find the sales tax on Joe's glove, take 7.5% of the cost of the glove, .075 times $34.00, which equals $2.55 total sales tax. When the tax is added to the cost of the glove, you have a total of $36.55 as the cost of the glove with sales tax.
6. Bill has 3 hours and 50 minutes available on his DVR and wants to record a film of 112 minutes, two comedy episodes of 23 minutes each, and a one-hour video of his sister's birthday party. How much available time will remain on his DVR after these recordings?

Answer: 12 minutes

3 hours and 50 minutes of available recording time can be expressed as 230 minutes (3 hours times 60 minutes per hour plus 50 minutes). Bill wants to record 112+46(2 times 23)+60(1hr)=218 minutes of video; leaving him with 12 minutes open on his DVR.
7. Susan is very proud of her cat Tabby's five new kittens. She would like to make a cushion for each kitten to sleep on when it goes to its new home. Each kitten cushion will be 30 inches long by 24 inches wide before it is stuffed with padding. The fabric Susan wants to use is 60 inches wide. How much total fabric length will Susan need to buy for the kittens' cushions?

Answer: 120 inches

Fabric is sold from bolts of various widths and in lengths measured in inches. Susan knows that her fabric comes from the bolt at 60 inches wide. She figures that she can fold the fabric in half width-wise to make the 30-inch length of the cushion. She needs each of the five cushions to be 24 inches wide, a total of 120 inches.
8. Danny is helping plan a dinner party for his scout troop. There are 23 scouts, 3 leaders and 5 parents coming to the dinner. Lasagna will be served; and the lasagna pans are 12 inches wide by 16 inches long. If each serving of lasagna is 4 inches by 4 inches, how many pans of lasagna will they need for the dinner?

Answer: 3 pans

Each lasagna pan can be marked in 4-inch square serving sections so that the 12 inch by 16 inch pan is 3 sections wide by 4 sections long. Therefore, each pan yields 12 servings. There are 23+3+5=31 guests coming to the dinner; so 3 pans of lasagna (36 servings) would be needed for the dinner, with some left over.
9. When Cathy returns from soccer practice at 4:20 PM the power is out at her house. The lights were on when she left home at 8:00 AM for school. As she goes to her room the lights come back on. She turns to the electric clock in her room to reset it and notices that it reads 1:05. For how long was the power out?

Answer: 3 hours, 15 minutes

Cathy's clock does not specify whether it is reading 1:05 AM or PM; but since the power was working up until 8 AM, it seems a safe assumption that it was stopped at 1:05 PM. Since the current time is 4:20PM, the time of the power cut (1:05) can be subtracted from it to leave 3 hours, 15 minutes of power outage.
10. At Tasha's school an average of 90% (per cent) in all subjects is needed to be named to the Honor Roll. She has grades of 92% in English, 87% in history, 93% in science, and 90% in art. How much is the LOWEST possible score will she will need in math to be named to the Honor Roll?

Answer: 88%

Tasha has 5 subjects; and the scores in them must AVERAGE 90% in order for her to be eligible for the honor roll. One way to solve her puzzle is to multiply the needed average score of 90% by 5 subjects to get the total percentage points needed for the Honor Roll, 450 points. Tasha's total points without the math score is 92+87+93+90=362. Subtracting her current total score (362) from her required total score (450) leaves 88% as the LOWEST math score she needs in order to average 90%. Scores higher than 88% would also make her eligible; but 88% is the LOWEST possible score.
