In the beginning of the book, Nan is identified as Monty's cousin, but we later find out that she is actually his fraternal twin sister who was raised by Uncle Leo because her mother was too poor to raise two children. Ashley is the girl Monty likes. Vinny is the bully who beat Monty up for wrecking his art project (which was actually done by one of Monty's clones). Monty first suspected he had an identical twin when he saw a boy who looked exactly like him (which happened to be one of his evil clones).

When he goes to ask Uncle Leo if he in fact does have a twin, he is surprised to hear that he does, but his twin isn't a boy but actually Nan! How ironic!
