This was one of the first Roald Dahl books I read and one of my favourites. This quiz is on the book, not the movie.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A witch is always a woman.

Answer: True

At the start of the book, in "A Note About Witches", the narrator says that even though most women are lovely, a witch is always a woman. Male witches do not exist.
2. The main character's grandma was born here. Parts of the book are set here. Apart from England, where is the main location in the book?

Answer: Norway

The book starts in Norway, where the narrator's parents died in a car crash. He goes to his grandma and they stay in Norway for a while, before going to England.

Norway has the largest number of witches living in it and is the place where the Grand High Witch lives.
3. There are lots of strange things about a witch - in particular, they are missing a few body parts. Which of these body parts do they have?

Answer: Ears

Witches have claws instead of fingernails, and wear gloves to cover up this fact. Witches are bald, and always wear wigs. Witches have feet, but no toes: they just have square ends. This makes walking in shoes uncomfortable.
4. What colour is a witch's spit?

Answer: Blue

Witches have spit as "blue as a bilberry". Instead of writing with ink, they can use old-fashioned pens with nibs and simply lick the nib when they want to write. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to notice the blue saliva, unless a witch spits, but they are very careful to avoid spitting.
5. The Grand High Witch, leader of all witches across the world, is rich. Why?

Answer: She has a machine that prints bank-notes

The Grand High Witch can make any kind of money (English pounds, American dollars, Chinese Yuan etc.) using machines identical to the ones used by governments. She lives in a large, expensive castle.
6. The first time the boy meets a witch, she offers him an animal as a "present". What pet does she try to give him?

Answer: A snake

A strange woman wearing gloves, presumably a witch, offers the main character a snake. The boy, terrified, climbs up a tree and stays there for hours.
7. The main character has two pets: William and Mary. What kind of animals are they?

Answer: Mice

The boy dreams of becoming the owner of a "White Mouse Circus", and trains William and Mary to become tight-rope walkers by putting them on one end of the piece of string, and cake on the other. The mouse walks across the rope and is rewarded with cake. The string is then lengthened, and the process repeated until the mouse is an expert tight-rope walker.
8. The Grand High Witch is even stranger than most witches. Why?

Answer: Her face is terrifying - she wears a mask

The Grand High Witch wears a very realistic mask, because her real face is disgusting. It looks like it was "pickled in vinegar", and is described in the book as shrivelled, putrid, decayed, foul and worm-eaten.
9. After the boy is turned into a mouse, he and grandma concoct a plan to put "Formula 86 Delayed-Action Mouse Maker" in the witches' soup. While in the kitchen, a chef spots the mouse and... what happens?

Answer: He cuts off the mouse's tail

The mouse's tail is cut off. He causes quite a commotion, climbing up the leg of a chef and making him take off his trousers.
10. Does the mouse successfully put the Formula in the soup?

Answer: Yes

The mouse manages to put the Formula in the witches' soup, and all of them - including the Grand High Witch - turn into mice. The story ends happily, with the mouse and his grandma planning to hunt down all the witches across the world and turn them into mice.
