Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This cute little face belongs to a baby sheep, which is usually called which of the following names?

Answer: Lamb

A mother sheep is called a ewe, her baby is a lamb, and the father is called a ram. Usually there are only one or two lambs born at a time, but there are a couple breeds of sheep who regularly produce more. Lambs are sweet, gentle, and soft to the touch, which is why they are often seen in petting zoos.
2. What is the proper name for a baby pig?

Answer: Piglet

An adult male pig is a boar and he mates with an adult female, known as a sow. They usually have between 7-15 piglets in each litter. The piglets are weaned around 6-7 weeks. Like many animals, pigs are very protective of their young, so don't ever touch any animal's baby without an adult present.
3. Baby cows are called calves. Which one of the following animals has babies known as calves also?

Answer: Whale

There are many baby animals that are called calves. One of the most common is the baby of domestic cattle, as seen in this photo. Other animals that have babies that are called a calf or calves are whales, caribou, camels, and dolphins.
4. Which of the following terms is often used for a baby deer?

Answer: Fawn

A baby deer is usually called a fawn, but occasionally the words calf or kid are used. Most fawns are born with some white spots on their backs that disappear as they grow up. Deer can be found on all of the continents except Antarctica, and come in a variety of colors and sizes. Some have horns/antlers, and some do not.
5. Where should you expect to see a baby mole-rat?

Answer: Underground

The mole-rat, sometimes referred to as a naked mole-rat, lives underground, has poor eyesight and almost no fur. Like bees, only the queen mole-rat breeds bearing an average of 11 pups a year and the whole clan assists in feeding and raising. Mole-rats appear to be resistant to cancer, do not appear to feel pain, and are the longest living rodents on the planet.
6. What is the proper term for a baby kangaroo or wallaby?

Answer: Joey

Most baby marsupials like kangaroos, koalas and wallabies, are called joeys. They live in their mother's pouch where the nipples are located. Some of these adorable babies will stay in their mother's pouch for up to a year. The pouch provides nourishment, warmth, and safety. The term 'joey' is thought to be of Aboriginal origins.
7. Most baby birds are not born covered with adult feathers. Instead they are usually covered with a fluffy layer that is called which of the following?

Answer: Down

Both the baby chicken (chick) and the baby duck (duckling) in this photo are covered in down. Down looks like fluffy fur to the human eye. But if you look carefully you can see that down is actually a type of very simple feather. Most birds even as adults will have a layer of down feathering underneath their regular feathers.
8. A baby alligator is called a hatchling.

Answer: True

Alligator babies of either sex are called hatchlings. The mother lays about 100 eggs in a nest of leaves and when the soft eggs hatch, she will carry the babies in her mouth down to the water's edge and let them swim into the water. Never pick up a baby alligator unless you have been trained, as even tiny babies can deliver a nasty bite.
9. What is the proper term for baby alpacas, llamas, and vicunas?

Answer: Cria

All of these babies are known as crias. Most mothers only give birth to only one cria at a time. During birth, the females of the herd gather around the mother to provide protection and to welcome the new baby. These adorable babies are up walking around and nursing in under an hour.
10. What is the proper term for any baby equine, such as a horse or zebra, that is under one year of age?

Answer: Foal

The proper term for any baby equine, wild or domestic, is a foal. Most foals can stand and even trot within the first 24 hours. They start nursing as soon as they can stand, usually within the first hour. Foals are energetic and like most baby animals, grow quickly.
