Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "'The word 'inquisitive' means--' 'We know what it means,' Klaus said. '_______.'"

Answer: Full of questions

Other ways to say 'inquisitive' are curious and eager for knowledge. This way, the word has a positive connotation. Some negative meanings for the same word would be snoopy, prying, and nosy.
2. "Klaus had chosen a room with a cozy alcove in it--the word 'alcove' here means_______."

Answer: a very, very small nook just perfect for sitting and reading

The word alcove comes from the Spanish word 'alcoba', which comes from the Arabic word 'al-qubba' which means 'the vault'.
3. "While he was telling them about different reptiles, Uncle Monty would often segue--a word which here means _______"

Answer: let the conversation veer off

From dictionary.com, "To proceed without interruption; to make a smooth transition".

Uncle Monty's conversation would segue "to stories from his travels, describing the men, snakes, women, toads, children, and lizards he'd met on his journeys." This is one of the few happy times the Baudelaires have experienced.
4. "'What does 'giddy' mean?' Violet asked, when they had finished reading the note. '_______', said Klaus, having learned the word from a collection of poetry he'd read in first grade."

Answer: dizzy and excited

"Giddy can be traced back to the same Germanic root *gud- that has given us the word God. The Germanic word *gudigaz formed on this root meant "possessed by a god."" (Dictionary.com).
5. "'I don't mean to be vainglorious,' Uncle Monty began, using a word which here means_______"

Answer: braggy

I like the sound of this word...vainglorious. It is pronounced as the two words it's made up of: vain and glorious.
Some of its many synonyms are conceited, egotistical, stuck-up, and narcissistic. An antonym would be modest.
6. "...the Baudelaire orphans turned to find Stephano standing there, the black suitcase with the shiny silver padlock in his hands and a look of brummagem surprise on his face. 'Brummagem' is such a rare word for_______"

Answer: Fake

Brummagem comes from Birmingham, after counterfeit coins were made in Birmingham, England in the 1600s.

Some synonyms are cheap, tasteless, tacky, and showy.
7. "'Tenebrous' means_______."

Answer: dark

In the story, this is where Klaus is researching the Mamba du Mal, and the way it likes to kill its prey. In the book he is reading, it says that the Mamba du Mal likes to strangle its victims to death.

The word tenebrous in this case refers to the dark coloring left on the victim's body, but it could also be used to mean 'dark and gloomy'. It comes from the Latin word 'tenebrae' which means 'darkness'.
8. "'I hope you are feeling a bit calmer,' Mr. Poe said, looking at each of the children in turn, 'and no longer entertaining the thought that Stephano is Count Olaf.' When Mr. Poe used the word 'entertaining' here he meant _______."

Answer: thinking

Poor Baudelaires! None of the adults seem to listen to them, and Mr. Poe only cares about his job as a banker.

A synonomous phrase for 'entertaining the thought' is 'entertaining the notion'.
9. "The result looked like a piece of metal you might not notice if it lay in the street, but in fact what Violet had made was a crude--the word 'crude' here means _______ rather than "rude or ill-mannered"--lockpick."

Answer: roughly made at the last minute

All of the other answers are also different definitions of crude. It can be a type of oil which is unrefined. It can also mean without subtlety, as in 'the crude facts'. Or it could mean barbaric or unsophisticated or uncivilized.
10. "Uncle Monty laughed again. 'It's a misnomer,' he said, using a word which here means _______."

Answer: a very wrong name

Some example of misnomers (www.answers.com/misnomer):

Animal crackers are not really crackers, they're cookies.
Arabic numerals originated in India, not in the Arab world.
Coconuts are not nuts, they're dried fruits.
One drives on a parkway, and parks on a driveway.
Panama hats are made in Ecuador, not Panama.

All synonyms and word origins are from www.answers.com, unless otherwise specified. Hope you liked the quiz! Please rate it on your way out!
