Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the phrase "ready, aim, fire", which of these words could be used instead of the word 'fire'?

Answer: Shoot

These words are often used to help people learning to shoot a gun to prepare themselves to make an accurate shot. On 'ready', the gun or rifle is placed into position; on 'aim', the target is brought into view using the sights; on 'fire' the trigger is pulled, releasing the bullet or shell.
2. If I say that I am lighting a fire under someone, what am I doing?

Answer: Trying to make them get started on some action

"Lighting a fire under someone" means to urge them strongly to get started doing something, usually something which has been put off for some time. It probably is derived from the idea that, if you actually lit a fire under them, they would get up pretty quickly!
3. When my parents warned me that I was playing with fire, I was confused, because I was nowhere near any fire. What did they mean?

Answer: They thought I was doing something risky, and might get hurt.

I was actually teasing my younger brother at the time, and they knew that if he got angry enough he might lose control and hit me. "Playing with fire" means doing something that could get you into trouble or cause you to suffer some physical or mental harm.
4. When a celebrity sits down at a press conference and says, "Fire away", what does he or she mean?

Answer: It is an invitation for people to start asking questions.

"Fire away" is an invitation for questions. It is probably used because reporters at a press conference tend to shout questions all at once, creating a sense of being under verbal attack, unless they are controlled by someone who manages the session. We might say that they "fire off" their questions very quickly.
5. A friend recently admired the fire in my diamond ring. What did she mean by that?

Answer: It sparkles beautifully in the light.

Diamonds are carefully cut and shaped so that light which hits them is refracted (bent) to produce flashes of colored light. These flashes of light are called the diamond's fire.
6. "Dave really drew Jack's fire on that issue". What did Dave do?

Answer: Dave said something that made Jack angry.

To draw someone's fire means to say or do something that makes them criticize or censure you. Dave may have made a statement with which Jack disagreed strongly, and Jack told him so in no uncertain terms!
7. My best friend was on fire at the prospect of going to see her favorite band in concert. Which of these words could replace 'on fire' in that sentence?

Answer: excited

"Being on fire" about something means to be very excited about it. We can sometimes say that people who feel a strong emotion are burning with the passion they feel, and this is a similar use of the fire image.
8. After I made a clay pot in my art class, I had to fire it. What did I do in order to dry and harden the clay?

Answer: Baked it in a special oven called a kiln

A kiln is a special oven that can reach very high temperatures. It is used to set objects that have been made from clay. It is also used to fire them again after they have been painted or glazed, in order to create the final finish on the object. As well as using a kiln, one can fire a pot by covering it with ashes and then burning a fire on top of it to produce the necessary heat without damaging the pot.
9. My daughter just came home and said her boss had fired her. How should I react?

Answer: I should be sad - she just lost her job.

To fire someone means to dismiss them - they no longer have a job. This use of the word probably started as a pun on the word 'discharge', which means both to shoot (or fire) a gun and to dismiss someone from employment.
10. My son plans to set the world on fire with his new invention. What does he expect to happen when he markets it?

Answer: He and his invention will make everyone get very excited.

To "set the world on fire" means to do something that causes a great sensation - headlines, talk shows, marketing potential, the world will be his oyster. (But that's another quiz.)
