Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Two of the most obvious things that we can see up in the sky are the sun and the moon. What is it called when the moon comes between the sun and earth?

Answer: Eclipse

When the moon comes between the sun and earth, it is called a solar eclipse. Sometimes the earth gets between the sun and the moon; this is called a lunar eclipse.

Every year there are 2 or 3 solar eclipses, but they are not all as pretty as the one in the photo. Mostly, only part of the sun is hiding.
2. What is the name of this planet? It is the second largest planet in the Solar System.

Answer: Saturn

Italian astronomer, Galileo Galilei, was the first to see the rings of Saturn, in 1610, but he could not work out what they were- he thought that the planet had ears! There are nine main rings, and over 60 moons circling around Saturn.
3. Our Solar System is only a small part of the galaxy we are in. What is our galaxy called?

Answer: Milky Way

Get away from the city lights and look up- the Milky Way is huge and stunning! There are millions of stars, just like our sun. My picture is from the southern hemisphere and the five bright stars are the constellation of the Southern Cross.

Pinwheel Galaxy is 21 million light-years away from us, and Andromeda Galaxy is our neighbour, and moving towards us. We will run into it in 5 billion years!

Bajor-B'Hava'el System is not a real galaxy - it is in the 'Star Trek' movies.
4. This is a picture of the moon, showing several dark areas. Ancient astronomers saw the dark patches, but what did they think that they were?

Answer: Seas

Many of the 'seas' were named, like Mare Tranquillitatis (Sea of Tranquility), which is where, in 1969, the first moon landing took place. They are not seas, but flat plains. They are darker because they do not reflect the sun's rays as well as the surrounding mountains.
5. This picture is part of the Bayeux Tapestry, a famous work of art created in the eleventh century. Look closely at the left panel and you will notice people pointing at an object in the sky. What is the famous thing they are looking at in amazement?

Answer: Halley's Comet

The comet appeared in 1066, just before the Battle of Hastings. It was not called Halley's Comet then- Edmund Halley was not born for another 500 years! Halley's visits our skies every 76 years and has been recorded for more than 2000 years. It has even been thought that the Star of Bethlehem was the same comet.
6. When a star burns out, it collapses into itself and its size is tiny, but its gravity is extremely powerful. What is this small but strong object called?

Answer: Black hole

The Magellanic Clouds are small galaxies, near to ours. The Big Bang is a theory about how the universe starts and bolides are types of meteors.

My picture is not a real black hole, but simply a hole that is black.
7. This is the MIR space station, which was in orbit from 1986 to 2001. Which country did it belong to?

Answer: Russia

'MIR' means 'peace' in Russian. The space station consisted of a core area, with several other modules added on. Much of the assembly was carried out in space. Astronauts from many countries visited the space station, including USA, France, Germany, Syria, Bulgaria and more. Altogether, there were 104 different visitors to MIR.
8. In 2006, one of the planets of the Solar System was downgraded to a dwarf planet. Which one?

Answer: Pluto

Pluto was the ninth planet from its discovery by Clyde Tombaugh in 1930 until its reclassification. It was NOT named after the Disney dog, it was the other way around! The planet was named for the Greek god of the Underworld (also known as Hades).

Io is a moon of Jupiter and Ceres is one of the asteroids orbiting between Mars and Jupiter. Charon is a moon of Pluto.
9. This picture is of the moon landing in 1969. Who was the first man down the ladder, and the first to get moondust on his boots?

Answer: Neil Armstrong

Soviet cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova was the first woman in space, aboard Vostok 6, but did not go to the moon. Michael Collins spent over 23 hours going round and round the moon while Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin were on the surface. In 1962, John Glenn was the first American to orbit the earth.
10. Which planet is this? It has a Great Red Spot and it is BIG!

Answer: Jupiter

Jupiter is more than twice the size of all the other planets put together. The Great Red Spot is a storm that has been raging for more than 300 years. It is almost three times the size of our Earth.
