Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What were the names of the youngest Banks children?

Answer: John and Barbara

There were four children in the Banks family. Jane, the eldest, was about six, and Michael four or five. The twins, John and Barbara, were infants.

In the 1964 movie, the only children were Jane and Michael. There was no mention of John and Barbara.
2. What did Bert do when he wasn't drawing chalk drawings?

Answer: Sell matches

Bert, whose full name was Herbert Alfred, sold matches for a living. He also created chalk drawings, on nice and sunny days. Sometimes people would put money in Bert's hat as they looked at his drawings.

In the chapter "A Day Out", Bert and Mary Poppins went inside a chalk drawing, and had a fine day out, eating raspberry-jam cakes and riding a carousel.
3. What was the name of Mary Poppins' uncle?

Answer: Mr. Wiggs

Mr. Wiggs had a dreadful problem whenever his birthday fell on a Friday. Whenever that happened, he found himself with so much laughing gas inside of him that whenever he laughed at the slightest thing, he floated up into the air.
4. What was the name of Andrew's special friend?

Answer: Willoughby

The next door neighbor, Miss Lark, had a small dog named Andrew, who lived the lap of luxury. He had four overcoats, slept on a silk pillow, and even went to the hairdresser twice a week. But Andrew did not appreciate that life, and befriended a stray named Willoughby. He demanded to Miss Lark that Willoughby be allowed to move in with Miss Lark and himself, and she reluctantly agreed.
5. Why did the cow keep dancing?

Answer: Because she had a star on her horn

Jane had an earache one day, so Michael was looking out the window to tell her what was going on on Cherry Lane. He saw a cow walking down the street, so Mary Poppins began telling them how that cow was a very dear friend of her mother's. That cow had once gotten a shooting star stuck on her horn and had to jump over the moon to get rid of it.
6. Who had a bad Tuesday in the chapter "Bad Tuesday"?

Answer: Michael

Michael woke up on the wrong side of the bed one morning, and did some very bad things whilst in his foul mood. He knocked things over and even kicked the cook! His foul mood was eventually resolved at the end of the day, when he misused Mary Poppins' traveling compass and got himself in a very bad situation.
7. "Feed the _____. Tuppence a bag!"

Answer: birds

Whenever Jane and Michael went on an outing, they liked to buy a bag of bread crumbs from the bird woman. The bird woman sat every day on steps outside, and offered the bags of bread crumbs to feed the pigeons and doves that surrounded her on the steps.
8. What did Mrs. Corry's fingers taste like?

Answer: Barley Sugar

Mary Poppins and the children went into a shop to buy gingerbread, and a woman that was older than the earth, Mrs. Corry, snapped off her fingers and gave them to the twins to chew on. New fingers grew back immediately in their place. Then she sold them gingerbread with glowing stars on them. Jane and Michael thought they were fake stars until later that night, when they saw Mrs. Corry and Mary Poppins painting the stars back onto the sky.
9. What bird cried after the youngest Banks children got their teeth?

Answer: The Starling

John and Barbara could talk to the sunlight, wind, and birds. Babies could do that, but as they got older, they forgot how and forgot that they had been able to. John and Barbara were determined to always be able to talk to their bird friend, the Starling, but one day after they got their teeth, only cooed and giggled.

They forgot how. The Starling claimed he wasn't really crying when that happened, but Mary Poppins knew he was saddened by that.
10. What way was the wind facing when Mary Poppins went away?

Answer: West

When Mary Poppins came to stay with the Banks family, she said she wouldn't be staying long, only until the wind changed. The wind was facing the East when she came, so the morning they woke up and it was facing to the West, the children knew that their nanny would be leaving.
